smudgersmith 2
Gents, A recent new comer to the Smudger household is a 15-week Border terrier dog. I have always worked JR’s (my two are breed from a working Welsh stock) both are butt ugly but game as arse-ol’s. My question, is there any hope for my Border, the general concense is that they are not the best dogs for ratting and rabbiting, would appreciate any advice or pointers. Smudger. Guest SJM
Im pleased with mine. He was hunting up and bushing from an early age, trying desperately to keep up with the lurchers and doing a good job for his size. He started showing an interest in rabbit holes around a year old and has recently started going to ground and bolting bunnies which may not sound a big deal but its what I got him for so Im happy I havent done anything with him other than break him to livestock and teach him recall and I havent rushed him, hes just come along at his own pace, and Im hoping he will carry on getting keener and keener every time hes out. He has a cracking nose and finds rabbits in dykes and rockpiles as well as marking open warrens. He makes a good wee addition to the team as if a rabbit goes to ground in a small shallow warren (and theres lots of them on the ground I hunt) he can bolt it back out for the lurchers, so no need for ferrets Good luck with your border, yes they are expensive (if you get a registered one) compared with other terriers, and yes they may be a little slower to mature but if you are just wanting a dog for ratching around and you like the look and character of the border, then go for it. They are quiet dogs too, Ive got 2 and you never hear them yapping just for the sake of it, when they bark theres always a good reason - they are good wee watch dogs. johnnyboy28 1
For ratting and rabbiting/bushing my soon to be 3 year old bitch takes some beating i also have a 2 year old bitch which is also excellent . I bought them as pups from working stock and they just done what any good terrier does no matter what type/ breed Quote Link to post
smudgersmith 2
Hi, Thank you both for your comments, I have always had a soft spot for the Border and I'm glad to hear that they are up for a bit of sport. He will I hope learn from my JR's, although at the moment he is more interested in eating horse Sh*t. Smudger Quote Link to post
