longy0710 2
Gents I am currently filling in my forms (yes still) and have a quick question regarding the calibres i am applying for. i know i am applying for .17hmr (long range rabbits and crows) and .22lr for closer range rabbits (as .17hmr ammo is expensive). I am doing some paid deer stalkign and it is something i will be doing more of. i would like to be able to take my own rifle on these days (ideally i would like .243 or 6.5x55). Could i apply for a slot for one of these on my ticket and put for the purpose of paid deer stalking?? Think this is abit of a grey area have had a look at the BASC guide and it is still no clearer. Let me know Regards Martyn Quote Link to post
GRAM71 29
hi mate, afaik you'll need to show some form of communication between you and the person you're buying the stalking from, either a confirmation or receipt from a booked day, i know of people that have "said" they did this and got a rifle slot on their license, don't know if it's true or not though as i'm sure you know alot of bullshit gets floated around on forums in general, is this your first fac? if it is then try by all means but don't be disappointed if it's refused 1st time round, i had to wait a year or so for my first c/fire, then another couple of years before i got it opened up. good luck anyhow. by the way, a swede really is the better of the 2 cals you mentioned, i know i'm being biased, but after trying a 243 then a 6.5 i was quite impressed with both, it was the heavier ammo that swung the scales in favour of the swede for me. cheers, gram. SportingShooter 0
No harm in trying all three Martyn. They can only say no for whatever reason but if you have a Good Reason for wanting the rifle and paying to stalk is as good a reason as having permission to shoot them for nothing, then you have to question why they have refused you. Put them all down and book a days stalking in the mean time. Print the receipt or confirmation off and then show it to the Enquiry Officer when he comes to visit. SS Quote Link to post

GRAM71 29
Thanks SS and Gram Yea there more i here about the 6.5x55 the more i like, really could do with getting out and getting some experience with that Calibre. the only thing i found a problem is getting hold of factory ammo, i ended up getting 200 norma 156gr alaskans, partly because the brass is better quality for reloading, and partly because it's one of the best and most accurate factory loads available, it was bloody expensive though, get this, £345 !!! i doubt i'll ever need any more though, as a mate of mine reloads for his, he reckons he can do the same for me for about a pound a pop. Just something to consider though, if you plan on using it a lot, either reload or at least make sure you can get a good varied supply, a young lad i know has just got one and he's using hornady through his and getting good groups, he's paying around £25 a box. good luck Quote Link to post
