THL amazes me....

Recommended Posts

There are times when this forum just amazes me.

One of the most influential fieldsports writers died last week, and barely gets a mention, while there are multiple page threads on the death of some American singer, and several threads about some Italian who decided he didn't want to help the England Soccer team loose any more.

John Humpreys was a columnist in the Shooting times for over forty years; he worked alongside some great names like Fred Taylor, Chapman Pincher, BB, etc, etc, and also wrote several very entertaining books, some of which are now quite rare.

Is it just me? Or has this forum (and this section in particular) become a sounding board for football immigration and other non-fieldsports related issues, while more important and relevant topics are barely mentioned?

Do you just like moaning? Maybe this forum aint for you? Then again maybe you just like coming on here for a bit of a moan? WTF are you all about starting a topic on benefits? Or was that just somethi

I think it's you mate. You can't blame people for not knowing who someone that you admire is! That he isn't mentioned by those of us that are aware of him, doesn't mean that his reputation or influence is diminished, only that we chose not to mention him. If he's not known to other members, what do you expect ? Did you post anything about him when he died?

I used to read his articles all the time as a youngster, but I cannot afford to buy the sporting press these days. The lads and lasses on here that have not heard of him are from a different generation.

Unfortunately, the rise of the internet has meant characters like John don't have the same press, because the net seems to be the main source of info for the younger generation.

Great shame, but that's the way it is.

Kindle will ensure that the collecting of books doesn't have the same meaning to people.

It would seem that the OP neglected to mention the death of J Humphreys as well. Then complains about it.

Me, I was too busy putting hunting related posts up.

Never really read much of the shooting times so do not know much about the man, but there is another thread about him on another forum which I have been reading. Seems he was an influential man.

Feel free to correct any grammatical mistakes you can find. Keep you occupied.

Actually, it did get a brief mention on here last week.

I'm not complaining about that, but that the priorities of some members; just look at the first page of general talk at the moment; a seven page thread about somthing called 'Glasgow Rangers' and four pages about Whitney Houston.

Bollocks.

Of the last four threads you've started, one was about a session with an air rifle, one about Whin, one about a thread that was deleted, and one about beer!

He was indeed.

He was into shooting, fishing and the good life, and wrote many articles and books on the subject.

I would go as far as to say that he was one of the most influential fieldsports writers of the twentieth century.

Thanks, but if you arn't capable of doing that for yourself then I'm buggered if I'm doing it for you. I've enough trouble keeping on top of my own.
