spoke to sally hancock the other day about this as a dog i was keeping an eye on with a view to mating one of my bitches in the future was a half brother to her. she said her only concern would be that by concentrating the border collie gene there would be an increased chance of the pups inheriting hip dysplasia and that this problem may not manifest until the pups were older. she also told me that now before they use a stud dog they have their hips tested. i have friends who have done this with terriers quite successfully. similar matings have been used in saluki x strains of coursing dogs with good success

if it was done once by accident or as a 1 off then the chances of it causing problems are low, if however the parents of the brother and sister share relatives also even quite far back i wouldnt advise it,

 

it will help both good and bad traits stick, this is because the dna of the siblings being mated will be very similar and the offspring will have less choice dna wise when they are being created etc, therefore they will be similar to their parents in alot of ways, but they will also have less gene variation then a dog with non related parents, you only have to look at pedigree dogs to see what problems these types of breeding can cause,

 

Ive read somewhere that alot of pedigree dogs have less gene variation then giant pandas, orangutans etc, which are endangered species and are so due to there not being alot of unrelated genes in which to use to make the population larger via breeding programs etc

I dont see the point breeding full brother to sister, unless a accident happens.

 

You got 100s dogs to choose a stud that suits you. so whats point risking the breeding and inbreeding so close?

If youve only a small gene pool,or you want to fix the best points of closely related stock,inbreeding is a valuable part of sustaining a good bloodline,only when you carry on inbreeding without the use of an outcross,do genetic problems surface.

I,v had a brother/sister mating and also a mother /son mating , no problems at all ,I,v seen other litters just as close with no problems

May i ask what have the parents done? An what does the sister have that the brother doesnt? The reason i ask is you should be looking to IMPROVE what you have i.e making them dogs better than what you already have, if you could improve either the dog or the bitch what would you add? Every dog could be better in certain areas. Surley you know someone who has a dog for stud thats just as good if not better than the brother to the bitch.
