A lot of this "I wouldn't breed off a failed fox/deer dog that was shit hot on rabbits" stems from some lads, not all, looking down on lads who just hunt bunnies.   In the lurcher world the rabbitin

Heres my young bitch who I would describe as a out and out "rabbit" dog, would I breed her to another "rabbit" dog? If I thought it was going to improve my stock then yes of course I would, after all

But why would you want to use a failed Bull x as a stud for rabbiting dogs ? Surely it's better to use proven rabbiting stock........or am I reading the question wrong ? Cheers

People have different standards, I personly would not breed off any jacker or failed dog of any sort.

For the sake of discussion Josy and not aimed at anyone in particular :D

Just some things i cannot get my head around no matter how hard i try :icon_redface:

Is it not all relative anyway, for one thing what exactly is 'the best' is there a yard stick we can judge all dogs with?

And a failed dog....if a dog has tried at foxing and failed, but is good on rabbits, then it is still a failed dog and should not be bred from.

Now what happens if a dog had only been used for rabbits and never even ran a fox. That dog although excellent at rabbits may still have the propensity to jack at any other species.

Another scenario.....say a deerhound cross which has come from a line of working deer dogs, and of course historically used for deer. Imagine this dog can hoover rabbits for fun and loves fox work, but yet refuses to work deer, that dog would still be a jacker. Now one thing i do actually understand, it would not be wise to breed it as a deer dog, but surely it would still be a usefull breeding dog for people wanting the species it was good at controlled?

Moll, I can only speak for myself if a dog has failed on what it was bred for it wouldnt matter how good it was on rabbits I still would not breed from it. When these pups have been bred for rabbits out of failed dogs I bet the surplus would not be advertised as bred out of failed dogs. To many failed dogs come up for sale or get passed on because the owners are to greedy or soft to do the right thing with them.

I completely understand where you are coming from Josy

You would not breed from failed even though it was good for rabbits because a rabbit dog is not your primary reason for having the dog, and you will have dogs that could do what you wanted plus rabbits so no need for just a rabbit dog in your kennels, completely understandable.

the problem is the lurcher is used in to perform many tasks for many people. all to different standards according to its owners situation. so one mans beef is another mans soya bean. all this talk best to the best  how does anyone know its the best :hmm: breed for yourself, attempting to create better as you go, it wont always workout, but learn and carry on. failed, jacker  theres another couple of words i dont think should be used, as again its not that simple, not with lurchers, far to many variables as to why the dog failed. how many people could tell you why their dog was a jacker. i dare to say 7/10 times down to the owner. correct choice of dog/correct training/correct diet/correct housing/correct vetinary care/correct fitness/correct entering at the correct time equals success 75% of the time. and now and again a cracker will surface

OK, here's my take on the question, as I understand it...... If a dog had been bred from a long line of fox dogs, and was brought in and expected to take foxes, but failed, (or jacked), on them and was then passed on to someone who only used it for rabbits, and turned out succesful at that.... would I use it as a stud to breed out and out rabbiting pups from a proven rabbiting bitch ??? NO, I wouldn't !! I would use a stud who had been bred from proven rabbiters ! Why use a dog that jacked at what it was bred for, even if it could turn it's hand to other quarry, why not use a recognised stud ????

Cheers.

Generally I agree Chart. All I was saying was that if that same dog proved to be exceptional at the rabbit game then the fact it failed at its originally intended purpose would not bother me as it contained all the right stuff for what I wanted. Proven lines are very important but I wouldn't be afraid to take a pup from a breeding where a parent was a failed fox/hare/deer/rabbit dog as long as they were exceptional at the job I wanted the pup for. JMO

Are you going to ask me this every time I make a post ?? LOL !! As I've told you before, my Deer X is out of a brood bitch that neither coursed or raced... that's a bit different to breeding from a known jacker, in my opinion.... but that's just what it is; MY opinion !

Your Theory is floored, you say you would find a proven rabbiter but isn't the failed fox dog still a proven rabbiter????? what is a proven rabbiter to you ???????? Isn't it a dog that can catch rabbits day and night and excels at the task and done it season after season isn't that classed as a proven rabbitor???? To Me abd i think many others That is a proven RABBITER weather its failed at fox or deer or not is irrelative.

Mate, I respect everyones opinion; but for me, I wouldn't be happy knowing the sire to my pups was a jacker.

I wouldn't want to own a dog that's from a jacker but would a failed fox dog that's smashing everything else regardless of the x be classed as a jacker ??????
