johnny boy68 11,726
Heres my young bitch who I would describe as a out and out "rabbit" dog, would I breed her to another "rabbit" dog? If I thought it was going to improve my stock then yes of course I would, after all aren't we all trying to get better animals. I only hunt rabbits these days so I'd look for another purpose bred rabbiting dog. but if i had a bullx that was doing the job on bunnys, an refused fox an anything else, would you use it across ye bunny dog?? well done for catching them rabbits what ever x Quote Link to post

bryson 562
but like has been said if the dog fails on fox but is good on rabs then you would still breed cause the only legal quarry is rabs and rats Quote Link to post

Moll. 1,770
Just because a bull cross is used for rabbits does not make it a failed fox dog I have never bred a dog in my life but i would definitely contemplate breeding a litter from this lad in the future. Is he the best rabbiting dog in the world, probably not, but he can go out night after night and catch with ease, he is biddable, intelligent, driven and well behaved. Imo there is no perfect dog. Perhaps i suffer from kennel blindness, but as an all round package (Apart from a couple of annoying things not work related) he is ideal for me 5 Quote Link to post

Giro 2,648
Seen some dogs that werent single handed fox dogs but they would be worth keeping because they were excellent catch dogs and could pull roe with style. I would breed that type into a rabbiting dog. Why intellegence, speed. It would have to improve what was already there.. Folk put saluki into rabbitng dogs failed or match dogs for the reason to get some of the atrobutes of them which are desirable feet. stamina, coat. Sure a match dog aint a good ferreting dog... Plus folk breeding first crosses of unproven stock thats not even had a chance to fail.. dogs that have never seen a rabbit. lol And depends on what folk are calling failed some dogs wont catch on a fen 3 out of 3 but local where that iduvidual hunts they could smash them in small feilds rough fell ground. Horses for courses and if your true to your self and breed for your self crack on.. Half these "out and out rabbitors" wont be worth a f*****g carrot. Define a rabbit dog.... How many rabbits a day or night equals a good rabbit dog? Are you talking sat next to hole all day and mouthing netted rabbits?? a spaniel will or terrier will do that.. On the lamp what numbers would you want?? I personally would want a high catch ratio and if rabbits where in good numbers at least 30. I have seen some really good bull crosses catch good numbers of rabbits on the lamp and would not even look at a fox. I would put them to a collie grey hound type. I have witnessed soft mouth bull crosses and wee whippet types that had a mouth like a crocidile.. 5 Quote Link to post
