I see too many dogs that cant jump but there owner sends them anyway and they get tangled in fences trying to pick game. I want all my dogs to be confident of jumping so i learn them from a young age...the last thing i want is my dog 300 yards away stuck on a f*****g fence.... 1 Quote Link to post
HBG 350 Posted February 10, 2012 Report Share Posted February 10, 2012 some good points hear yes good to jump but lets try and be as safe as possible, the last thing you need is a dead or injured dog, for the sake of a pic well, plus jumping for the sake of it will put stress on the joints then later in life your dog ends the hunting world early, i think the lad took a pic of his dog jumping a fence it probably jumps regulary i dont think he just did it for the photo,its the same as any part of working dogs people have different standards as to what they expect of there dogs,some people on here potter about just walking them some graft them and need em to jump. 2 Quote Link to post

I know the types mate. They run up to the fence, panic then try and do it from a standing jump and land on top of the fence. Ok if its not barb but fecked if it is. My big Lab jumps fences really that he shouldnt and its cringeworthy for some folk watching him but i know he can do it, if i'm unsure or know he cant then i wont send him. He'll run full pelt at fences and jump them just like a lurcher. My 2 pups are decnt jumpers too, no where near the confidence of Buzz but they are more than capable........... Quote Link to post

But they do, maybe they been (lucky).? just hope there luck dont run out.! I suppose you got let them jump fences like above, so that they can handle them, but (only) when they are very good on solo fences . Quote Link to post

FUJI 17,208 Posted February 10, 2012 Report Share Posted February 10, 2012 I'm in the "must" jump camp because i'd be f****d if i am lifting them over a fence while carrying a lamp/battery and bag of game unless it's really awkward!!!..it's an absolute must for me,obviously those who run the flat land etc have no need for their mutts to jump all and sundry? I've seen quite a few my mate has had that only ever ran on big land and when we came to a fence or gate it just stood there and didn't have a clue how to go over,under or through to reach the otherside lol.Lurchers are or should be canine ATHELETES?..if they get injured while jumping then so be it..you can't wrap em up in cotton wool and if you think otherwise then perhaps this game ain't for you?
