Yes it was a wooden thing hung around your neck. Way before my time though. On the other side of it, I went to a Welsh only school and was caned for speaking English. You wouldn't believe it nowadays but its true. Welsh it still spoken here a lot (im in Carms.)

Short answer is that the English tried to stamp out Welsh culture and identity, and the language was part of that. So Welsh children were banned from and punished for speaking the Welsh in Welsh schools. . . .

same happened to my old man for speaking English in an irish speaking school, run by the Christian brothers he cant even speak irish

It was an attempt by our jealous neighbours to eradicate Britains oldest language! The children who spoke Welsh (and got caught) had to each wear the WN board. The last child, at the end of of the day was caned!!

the welsh knot board was a myth it was never used ,welsh was dicouraged over english as believe it or not some children had no english or very little wich was thought to handicap them in a modern wales,before you start going all brothers of glendowyer on me i come from a faimly of welsh speakers who moved south in search of work
