francolin 449
so where do the lads go to get their first terrier if they aint in the loop?. you need to know folk in the game. and even then if your green. how do you know they are decent lads. if you have to buy a pup. do your homework before you go' 1 dont be swayed by fancy names / breeders or dogs. 2 never buy a pup on the veiwing. go away and have a think about what you have been shown. use your head not your heart 3never buy a pup where you cant see both parents. 4 never take your wife/partner 5 have in mind what you are looking for. coat size etc. ask for any info on grandparents if available. 6dont go in your hunting gear. go clean and tidy and be polite. remember this fella/gal. may be able to help out when starting your terrier/ or need to breed a replacement 7check that the litter is healthy and well socialised. 8the seller may ask you a few questions before selling to you. he may think your not a suitable owner for one of his pups. answer politely and honestly. 9pick a friendly outgoing pup exchange details. you may need them later and be on your way with your new terrier 10 last but not least. no matter how desperate you are dont be afraid to go away without a pup if their not what your looking for. their are some good doglads that sell the odd litter. its not all doom and gloom contrary to popular belief some very good dogs are bought in. as well as shite. ive sold both in the past. and the belief that if its gifted its good. is a nonesense. as ive also gifted good and poor pups. 11 if there talking about digging to strangers there telling porkies ,dont trust em Quote Link to post

Mosby 355
I've had terriers for around ten years. Other than the group I hunt with I don't know of another legitimate terrierman within 1,000 miles. I've been trying to get a good fell for years. I've been given several crosses (which I've driven 8 or more hours one way for). I've been given two awesome dogs. I've bought some good ones. But damn it's hard to get a good dog. Fact is I haven't had the means to go and check out litters, I don't have the ability to hunt with guys. Nobody lives here. I was given the chance to go check out a litter recently. Cost me $300 to check the litter and I didn't come home with a dog. Ya'll in England have it cushy. You could hunt with twenty guys for the cost of some of us on the west coast U.S.A visiting for a hunt with one guy. I personally think the hoarding and protecting over terriers because you are afraid of so and so not raising them right is going to be the death of some great lines. Everybody bitches about Nuttal, Gould and others who made some money off the dogs. Fact is, that's all that can be found now in America. So, if it weren't for them, no good dogs would be around at all. The jagdterrier guys have a much different way of things and honestly, I like it alot better. I have never had trouble getting a jagd. People sell them, give them away, whatever but one thing they all have in common is that they are not jealous hoarders of their life's work. They are always talking new guys into the sport. Most of them will raise a whole litter for you cause you asked them to. Personally, I don't think jagds are the end all terrier or I'd be set for life, but I do think that the fell guys could learn from the jagd guys. When it comes to getting fells, I have become very disillusioned. Everybody has been very kind but the requirement of kow-towing to people and asking for a favor is embarrassing and degrading in my opinion. There is no way in my location to prove to anyone I talk to that I am legitimate. I have yet to talk to somebody and not be told that when a litter arrives they'll keep me in mind or straight out say they will give me whatever I ask for. This has never culminated in a pup being sent and the reality of it is most of the same people stop calling or answering the phone as soon as a litter hits the ground. I am almost of the opinion that as far as dignity goes (and money if someone requires you to hunt with them before gifting you with anything) it is less of a hassle to buy from the loud mouth bragging his dogs up.
