I think its a risk you take when you buy a pup.Just because it does not make the grade does not mean the seller had f****d you about or lied about the parents,i have seen 1st hand top class bitchs put to top dogs and pups turned out shite, they dont always click.I personally think if you buy worker to worker pups well your increasing the chances of rearing a worker and preferly of parents you have seen work if possible.I have neither bought or sold a pup in a good many years but a friend of mine gifted me a well bred bitch and she has turned out a cracking bitch,i was lucky with her as ive had pups of another mate and they were little or no good and both from very good working parents,as i said they dont always click. There is genuine lads that will sell pups, then there is lads that just want to make a quick buck, but if the homework is done on the pup before purchase then you will sort out the messers from the genuine lads.

I agree with fatman about putting 2 good dogs together and getting sh*te,sometimes this happens but a lot of these pups go to lads with no experience in terrierwork and so they are not entered correctly, further down the line when you've been out and done a bit you stand a bit of a chance of getting it right, most lads starting off on their own only know what they've read or been told, lots of lads f*ck up their first dog be it terrier or lurcher its just part of life, you can't buy experience and the only way to get it is get out there and make a few mistakes, only then will you learn there are no shortcuts to having good working stock and not blame your inexperience on the breeder, atb,WM

so where do the lads go to get their first terrier if they aint in the loop?. you need to know folk in the game. and even then if your green. how do you know they are decent lads.

if you have to buy a pup. do your homework before you go'

1 dont be swayed by fancy names / breeders or dogs.

2 never buy a pup on the veiwing. go away and have a think about what you have been shown. use your head not your heart

3never buy a pup where you cant see both parents.

4 never take your wife/partner

5 have in mind what you are looking for. coat size etc. ask for any info on grandparents if available.

6dont go in your hunting gear. go clean and tidy and be polite. remember this fella/gal. may be able to help out when starting your terrier/ or need to breed a replacement

7check that the litter is healthy and well socialised.

8the seller may ask you a few questions before selling to you. he may think your not a suitable owner for one of his pups. answer politely and honestly.

9pick a friendly outgoing pup exchange details. you may need them later and be on your way with your new terrier

10 last but not least. no matter how desperate you are dont be afraid to go away without a pup if their not what your looking for.

their are some good doglads that sell the odd litter. its not all doom and gloom

contrary to popular belief some very good dogs are bought in. as well as shite. ive sold both in the past.

and the belief that if its gifted its good. is a nonesense. as ive also gifted good and poor pups.

What i would like to think is that there is more PRIDE in giving a dog than selling one .In giving, the owner is chosen and not the other way round .Im a firm believer that lads starting out should not automatically be ENTITLED to own a terrier with working ancestry but instead EARN the right to be given one from spending time served without whinging and getting to know the game before making basic mistakes with what is potentially a good worker .If a newby dont want this apprenticeship then he aint in it for the right reasons and certainly not for the long haul .The quick fix is never the right way to go .Fair enough a keen lad may BUY a made dog but id like to think he knew a bit before hand .i certainly would not give a pup to someone i didnt personally know ,no matter what i was told third hand . I brought a russell x patt a couple of yrs back,I was told by the breeder that it was from working parents I never saw the parents and drove 90miles to pick it up  :doh:paid him my hard earned cash and home I went with it, thinking it was going to be the best thing since sliced bread

Well what a bag of shite it turned out to be,I had it till it was 9 months old then got shut

after that I got 2 Patts off my mate which I should of done in the 1st place not from the same litter and both of them dogs do the job perfectly well

I guess want Im saying is only get dogs from lads you know and trust

9 month? Jesus. Not totally sure with regards terriers but shouldn't training still be going on by that point...?

well i do give pups away but on a whole i sell them my dogs pay for them selves

i given pups to friends that have flogged them on as soon as there up abit or bred of them non stop

i dont lie [bANNED TEXT] selling pups usually both parants are here to be seen if iv used some 1 else;s stud dog then i show a pic

iv sold / gave pups away over the years iv had good and bad reports back on there working abilty no one can guarantee a pup will work

i think people on here must be made of money if they can afford to give all there pups away

It's always nice to be gifted a pup,i have 10 dogs and i bought 1 of them in a lurcher bitch, of a lad that thank fcuk he didn't know what he had or maybe she would not of being the same bitch if he still had her,she certainly would not of got the same work with him as i give her,but when am gifted a pup i all ways like to bring along a bag of dog or something with me not as payment more as a thank you because anyone that has reared a litter of pups correctly know it's not a cheap thing to do,but what rightly pisses me off if you gift someone a pup and the sell it on,ok if they say to you here that pups has to go will you take it back and you tell them give it to someone else or whatever but just to take it for the soul porpuse to sell it on pisses me off

Rik you reared a pup for nine months and it wouldn't do a rat so its a pile of shit? Did you spend any time with the pup? I've just been ratting with two 7 month old pups the dog pup is killing rats as fast as he can get to them the bitch pup is baying at them but will not bite one, her grandmother was the same and didn't kill a rat until she was 4 but i dug at least once every week of the season to her from the age of 14 monhs old, pups are pups and terriers work like all hunting isn't just about killing

believe me when I tell you guys the pup was a total waste of time and food and it still is,like I said my mum has it now and it doesn't go near the ducks in the park she is frightened of them she cant let it off the lead because if it hears a loud noise it will run for miles, its 2yr old now but my mum loves her a nice bit of company for her,it a lovely dog but just no good for this game
