My lurchers will work cover but nothing like my mates lab, which works like a spaniel. Nothing is left un checked and is relentless. It finds stuff my lurchers don't all the time. Quote Link to post

George (ferret boy) 6 Posted February 6, 2012 Report Share Posted February 6, 2012 Lurchers are good in cover but sometimes they get to a spot where they cant get in like a really thick bramble i would recommend either a spaniel x terrier or a beagle x terrier the best cover dog ive ever seen was a cocker x lakeland x beagle very very good dog would get in any cover and wouldn't leave until it was sure there was nothing left in there Quote Link to post
WILF 46,534 Posted February 6, 2012 Report Share Posted February 6, 2012 I couldn't decide if this should go in the hound or terrier section, but figured that folk here would have experianced a good range of different dogs used for the above job. I'm looking for a dog to work the cover, both small type - hedges, brambles, ditches etc, and also bigger spots like woodland, cover crops etc. The dog would be used for rabbits and also for flushing larger stuff ( i do a lot of travelling to places where this is legal), i would really like it NOT to go to ground, as we have a lot of difficult places, and would also like it to speak when on it's quarrys ass, or maybe also on very hot scent. I am really open to pures or cross breeds, but would prefer something with not too much spaniel, and would not go for a pure spaniel. I would like something to be able to hunt independantly, but not to be tracking it down to the next county. I would like a dog able to get stuck in if needed and not just flush. Any ideas? ( I know its a lot of asks) A pal of mine has a couple of pat terrier/spaniels and they were/are brilliant at working cover for game of all sizes.......... Quote Link to post

Whilst our team of running dogs bush well to each other and find plenty of game etc, they just cannot compete with a dedicated cover dog. Some of the cover we face is big and tight. Also, if the runners have pushed in deep to get whats hidden within, whats going to run anything that pops out, and it would be difficult not to end up working the dog as a lurcher, which we don't need. We need a cover dog. Looks like spaniel/terrier or even better spaniel / terrier / beagle mix would be ideal. So any litters of the above? Quote Link to post
