Ideation 8,216
I couldn't decide if this should go in the hound or terrier section, but figured that folk here would have experianced a good range of different dogs used for the above job. I'm looking for a dog to work the cover, both small type - hedges, brambles, ditches etc, and also bigger spots like woodland, cover crops etc. The dog would be used for rabbits and also for flushing larger stuff ( i do a lot of travelling to places where this is legal), i would really like it NOT to go to ground, as we have a lot of difficult places, and would also like it to speak when on it's quarrys ass, or maybe also on very hot scent. I am really open to pures or cross breeds, but would prefer something with not too much spaniel, and would not go for a pure spaniel. I would like something to be able to hunt independantly, but not to be tracking it down to the next county. I would like a dog able to get stuck in if needed and not just flush. Any ideas? ( I know its a lot of asks) Edited February 5, 2012 by Ideation 1 Quote Link to post

leegreen 2,149
Terrier Spaniel X. I have one and it fits your requirements but I'm afraid it's not for sale. I think this cross would suit you well. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
That's kind of where i am leaning, either spaniel / terrier, or spaniel / terrier / hound, or some kind of similar combination. Some one also suggested a beddy? I find it strange that there is no one really breeding line bred mixed breed bushers, like a 'lurcher to lurcher' breeding. Even the x breeds always seem to be first x's. Quote Link to post
danny300 2,240
i've a 3/4 springer 1/4 terrier barking and doing cover was a great to get her into the pack old charlie has got better during the day with her but she will go to ground if she can fit in Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I'd really like to see a terrier / spaniel x work in the flesh if anyone is able to help? Plenty can vouch for me. Quote Link to post
Moll. 1,770
A terrier which is not from hard digging lines, and train it not to go to ground, or good recall so if it does you can get it back out Edited February 5, 2012 by Moll. Quote Link to post
redcharge 378
I know of a litter that will be due in a few weeks time Springer x Terrier depending how many the bitch has, there could be a spare pup PM if interested 1 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I never even considered being able to 'train' a terrier not to go to ground if so inclined? Where i am you cannot walk anywhere without falling down a hole, and most are not diggable for various reasons. But the thing is i would like the dog to be able to work fox above ground, and would have thought that would have led it to being more inclined to enter below? Quote Link to post

Would defiantly go and see one for yourself you will see what i mean. Edited February 5, 2012 by weasle Quote Link to post

The situation you are in it sounds like you will have to get a dog that will not physically fit in a hole, just as there's no guarantees that a dog will go to ground, theres no guarantees that it wont either. It would be soul destroying to bring a pup on for 18 months or so only to lose it down a hole. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I'm not sure where i stand on spaniel x's, so want to get a look at some. Grew up round spaniels, and some very top trial dogs, so the idea of them barking and chasing game doesnt sit well (its a mental block), so i would rather it didnt look like a spaniel haha. Edited to add - i also like the idea of something with a bit more bulk than a straight terrier, to handle knocks from any bigger stuff. Edited February 5, 2012 by Ideation Quote Link to post
