The Duncan 802
On todays walk I took the whole pack, rather than taking my lurcher pup, Roxy, separately. When they were off-lead and running and playing they spotted a couple and their spaniel. I whistled the pack back to heel and they all obliged as usual, apart from Roxy. No amount of calling or whistling was heeded as she was focused on playing with the dog in the distance. I headed over to get her and when we'd closed to a hundred yards, she suddenly decided to come. Naturally, I had to tell her off and she stayed on the lead for the rest of the walk as a lesson, whilst the rest of the pack played and ran around. So the 17 week old pup had her first 'Fenton' moment and it probably won't be the last as she learns, but the error here wasn't a costly one and provided a learning opportunity. Has anyone had any particularly memorable 'Fenton' moments ? Atb Duncan. PS - when she is in trouble her name is Roxington! 1 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
Aye, most times we are out Dont chastise her too much if she does come back, however infuriating, just put her back on the lead and ignore her. Otherwise they can start staying away like naughty kids who know they are going to get a slap when they get home. Edited to add - a couple of memorable ones include dog on toy dog, dog dissapearing for two hours after something into a field of maize, and one this week where the dog spotted something else whilst ferreting. It happens even at the best of times mate, running dogs love to chase stuff. Edited February 5, 2012 by Ideation 1 Quote Link to post

I guess she'll learn, as all my other dogs have - they come back impeccably when called. It's easy to keep patient with a pup as you know all pups have to have their 'fenton' moments to learn where the line is drawn. Ps thanks for the 'heads up' - I feel a bit more prepared knowing running dogs can be a bit 'wayward' Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,164
Mine did it the other week, and to make matters worst, the old lady with the dog gave him a treat and made a fuss..... No way was he coming back then! Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,324
my old lurcher ozzy did the same. spotted an old dear with a whippet in the distance. and was off. then i saw the mondeo heading up the road in front of the whippet. never felt so helpless. it hit ozzy just before he got to the old dears whippet. he was very lucky and survived. ....to be honest he wasnt one for playing as a young dog and i think the whippet had an even luckier day . in my defence he is a lot better trained now Quote Link to post
cmccmc 24
Very nearly, yesterday. We were walking along the old railway paths, the pup walking mostly off-lead but on-lead past fields with stock in them. We spotted a field with a pony coming up and I called the pup over. Just as I'd clipped the lead on, some lads on dirt bikes scorched up behind us. They're not supposed to use the paths, but I wouldn't even have minded so much if they'd slowed down as they passed - they didn't! I don't THINK the pup would have bolted or chased them, but you never know. Glad I didn't have to find out! Edited February 5, 2012 by cmccmc 1 Quote Link to post

mintstick999 485
Yep, i've had a few fenton moments, Magpie when she was a pup decided to run the full length of a beach, beside a horse, (not bothering it) i just stood there a watched her go out of sight, when the rider came back, so did Mags, (a few choice words were said to her, i can tell ya) She tried it another day, but with a different horse, and paid the price the horse kicked her, (not hard, only caught her slightly on the leg) thank god, but it cured her habit, and now she knows better than to go anywhere near a horse, I think we've all had a fenton moment with our dogs, if we;re honest, well maybe not the people who never let the poor dogs off a lead...
