blue staffy 145
hi folks i am looking at getting my first gun dog breed and looking for advice , the dog will be used mainly for beating and picking up and also flushing for my lurcher i prefer spaniels but everyone i know keep labs and tell me they are a better dog when it comes to training what do you all think ? Lab 10,979
Yes Labs' probably are steadier to train than a springer but if its mainly beating and flushing your going to be doing then i'd go for the springer or maybe even a cocker.... 1 Quote Link to post
noddy10 411
cocker or springer for beating would be my choice. Quote Link to post
coldweld 65
Springer over cocker ! Cockers are wonderfull little dogs but a springer will struggle to retreve a goose and a cocker will not have a chance, Get yourself a well bred beaters dog without two many FTCH and you will get a bulldozer of a dog fearless of briar and thorn. RubyTex 1,957
Echo the Springer comments, although a Springer struggling with a Goose?! No chance! Fair game to them Quote Link to post
blue staffy 145
cheers for the coments folks , 2 nice springers in your profile pic there ruby , how do you find the springers for retreving ? Quote Link to post
RubyTex 1,957
From my experience the dog is a little shit when it comes to bringing them back. They both hunt and flush very well but on the retrieve the bitch is brilliant. She's been out a few times (only being 10 months old..) she's got a good engine and runs all day. I'd recommend a bitch but that's just from my own experience and talking to other guns when out and about. They'll retrieve anything though, foxes, rabbits, pheasants etc, all fair game. Just a bit headstrong sometimes. Mine have a lot of FTCH in their history but run into the rough like there's no tomorrow, i think you've got to get them out into the brush ASAP. Quote Link to post
Francentey-FTB 29
as an out and out allrounder it has to be a springer spaniel Quote Link to post

gonetoearth 5,144
LABS ARE BORN HALF TRAINED , SPRINGERS DIE HALF TRAINED 1 Quote Link to post
GrCh 856
Yes Labs' probably are steadier to train than a springer but if its mainly beating and flushing your going to be doing then i'd go for the springer or maybe even a cocker.... I bet you hated saying that lol Quote Link to post

I bet you hated saying that lol I'm not blind to the breed mate.... Facts are if you want a beating dog then go for the springer and if you want a retriever then go for a Lab.... Lab's still rules the roost though..... Quote Link to post
