whats going to be a good bushing dog for me?

im thinking about looking for another dog to use for bushing rabbits to my lurchers.

 

ill be working mostly hedge lines, brambles, nettles and ditches.

 

dont want something that will yap as i like to work quietly. something willing to get stuck in to almost any cover come back when called.

 

i have a patterdale but he has decided he wants to go to ground so ive decided to get a dog that will not want to or be able to go to ground.

 

i was thinking of a springer spaniel do you reckon this would suit me?

i also though about a pure bedlington terrier.

 

i haven't decided what to go for so any input would be good.

im having the same problem mate and im seriously thinking of a good working bedlington i know i guy who has one and i think i might ask him to see it working i no i wont be disapointed cause ive seen pics of this dog grafting

my bedlington will face any cover,very good nose 17inch ts cracking temperament will hunt up all day long. draw backs his coat picks up every sort of crap you can think of even when clipped out. will certainly be nowhere as biddable as a spaniel. was a hard headed dog to train but got there with patience and taking my time.mine is silent when he works but i have seen quite a few beddys yap like mad when hunting up.dont much experience of spaniels.

I work some terriers ,,,,good little dogs, but if you like it quiet i wouldnt touch a terrier...not even a beddy.

hi mate make sure you have enough work for a springer and they do need a lot of work , they are very hypo when not working, on the other hand a bedlinton very good hunter but very laid back when not working ,it is as tough they have a on/off switch on them, they are a little head strong but very biddable, i have a 3 year old and a 6 month old pup that i am going to train up as a gun dog fingers crossed , or you could get a beddy/whippet good hunters and will catch you rabbits/rats ATB

i mooch 3/4 sometimes more days a week mate for 2 or 3 hours. as walking my dogs is when im out mooching, more threw the summer. i ferret every sunday(when its in season).

 

im out as much as i can after work and at weekends. i just had 3 days holiday from work and spent it mooching round my permissions.

 

im hoping thats enough for a springer, there is quarry on my land but the dogs have to work hard to get it threw the day. i got one decent run on friday and the saluki put it up out the hedge and my collie x caught it as it bolted threw to the other side of the hedge. at the moment were only putting up what the lurchers put up as my bull will work the rough but he just runs threw it, he wont use his nose. what ever we put up its by accident.

 

like i said i dont like dogs that make noise as i feel it lets everything else know were are around and the bunnys are shy enough that they stay close to safety already without being warned a field before we get near them.

I preffer a small type some thing out of working dogs but would be less inclined to go for those that are bred mostly for field trialing.

cocker spaniale not a bad one mate,and am only going by the one ive got here ,now this one here is one them fancey ones you see in crufts i minded it for me lad 5 years ago when he went on holiday, and fecker is still here haha,so i thought,i will see if i can get working got her out with me terrriers, and she got the idea fairly quick, so i think get one of them off workink stock,they would be ideal little grafter ATB tony

I would go for a springer mate I got my self 1 last year had to be patient with her but then it just clicked and no looking back now but u have to trust there nose if they dnt go in there's nothing there good honset bitch proved me well looking to get another any time soon atb on ur hunt
