whin 463
thats a true saying but what if the father is dead had half cross of tor of dartmoor big coursing dog very good on roe , he died didnt have a replacement , very tricky to get a line back if you dont breed often and dont stud your dogs out willy nilly, saw all sorts of tor of dartmoor crosses they all have the same nature run to they die would love to have another tommorow, and they breed true some good coursing and working lurchers been bred out of that stuff Quote Link to post
Tommy 9
Lucky was one hell off a dog there's no taking it away from him his ability.....he made it all look so easy and did this season after season for around 5 seasons Class dog BUT........its a fact in that the offspring he had produced hasnt lived up to expectation and lots and lots of the pups have the style of there father but simply lack HEART I know its odd that such a class animal doesnt breed TRUE but thats why breeding is such a difficult area As for "WAS HE USED OVER GOOD BITCHES" .........agreed a lot of shite was taken to Lucky. You only needed to look at the countrymans weekly at one point and there were pups DIRECTLY out of him every week.......put to bitches JUST to CASH in on the LUCKY name BUT ............he was also put to CLASS bitches. Bitches that had proved themselves over and over and were bred from GENERATION after GENERATION of Hare KILLING dogs ........and again the MAJORITY of them turned out lacking heart As for the breeding back to the FATHER.....well Lucky was bred from JOE......JOE has produced a good few decent dogs This sint meant to slag LUCKY as i'm probably one of his BIGGEST fans for the way he ran.......but facts have to be faced and IN my OPINION he ISN'T a dog that PRODUCES GOOD DOGS when bred from All the best Tommy Quote Link to post
samba 534
SO DOES THIS MEAN LUCKY NEVER THROUGH A DECENT DOG/BITCH IF SO HOW DID TINA WIN THE FORLEY AND IM SURE THERES PEOPLE OUT THERE AS A LUCKY BRED PUP THAT KILLS HARES BUT MAYBE NOT TO THE SAME STANDARD BUT DERBYDOGS [WINNERS] DONT ALSO BREED WINNERS THERE DOGS BRED BY OTHER FOLK SANKEY/NUTTAL ECT WHAT I HAVE SEEN RUN THAT WOULDNT CATCH A HARE IN A TELEPHONE BOX BUT NOBODYS KNOCKING THERE DOGS Quote Link to post
Tommy 9
SAMBA have i wrote NEVER ?????............I put the MAJORITY I know the bloke who bred TINA.........the rest of that LITTER ( at least 3 of the litter what i have heard of) were Shite, the mother of TINA was Tipper, bred from GOOD dogs to GOOD dogs for years If anyone tells you that they never breed rubbish then more than LIKELY their telling you lies..........all lines of dogs produce RUBBISH !! As i said in my 1st post there WILL BE dogs out there bred from LUCKY that are TOPPERS but he has thrown a lot of RUBBISH......NOW i only breed pups when i personally WANT ONE MYSELF.......so why would i bother risking using a dog that HAS THROWN a high % of RUBBISH ?? AGAIN my opinions are only built on what i have personally seen are have been shown/told by GENUINE mates. LUCKY was A CLASS DOG but isnt a PRODUCER. All the best Tommy Quote Link to post
luke 2
tommy what would you say was a good stud dog?i my self youse whippet and whippet x greyhounds at stud and never known them to throw a jacker. it is very hard to match two coursing dogs to breed off of you will always get a lot wastage. Tommy 9
Luke I think there is a lot of a GAMBLE involved with the breeding game.....you could put TWO CRACKING working dogs together....rear em for 18 months an then em turn out RUBBISH I think that to BREED you need to be HONEST with yourself ......look at your bitches weak areas and TRY to use a dog that MIGHT add that area to your dog. I would also always try and breed froma dog that has maybe already produced some Good offsprings All the best Tommy Quote Link to post
Autumnbriar 0
My mother always had a saying "if you see a good dog.....DON'T use him, USE his father" seems sensible to me. Good saying that: having agreed with the statement I have used the son of a dog who was better than his offspring and produced good animals: pups also throw back to the grandparents. Nikey........ that is an EXCELLENT saying and fairly true....... Quote Link to post
Night Walker 591
with breeding u try and put best to best and then keep your fingers crossed its always a gamble theres not alot more you can do as long as you rear the pup correctly and put as much in as u can. Quote Link to post
luke 2
the best bitch i ever owned was mated three times to different dogs and the least good of the three throw the best pups but still not in the class of the bitch. now i go for a quarter whippet for gameness and strike half greyhound for gameness and speed quarter saluki for stamina feet and coat and they all must be off stayers.they probably wouldent do down in the south east but would be hard to top else were Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
Surely its the man maketh the dog routine here a bit as well i had a great dog on hare in the early eighties he was at stud and had over two hundred offspring that were all just run of the mill nothing special with the odd one making good until i bred a litter and kept one and the rest went to a traveller who knew how to enter and condition a dog all that litter were spot on. Thinking back i would have said it was down to the owners not entering and looking after their whelps as much if not more than the actual breeding ive seen it many times with hare dogs its not just breeding its work that makes a great dog you can have the best breed in the world and if they are bought by messers they will not be any good. same as when you get a young un yourself and the old dogs still doing the job its so easy to not put the work in on the young one when its needed Quote Link to post

juckler123 707
Luke your not wrong with your breeding i like a bit of whippet in the mix as well as the saluki greyhound etc imo the whippet grew has done wonders and along with the saluki has made a big difference to the coursing lurcher in the last thirty years Edited April 27, 2007 by juckler123 Quote Link to post
