Guest Frank
Strange that, in it. A dog so good, well known ect, then his pups turn out mostly not good A big risk this coursing thing? Frank. Quote Link to post
samba 534
from what i can make out he sired a hell of a lot of pups, most of them turning out to be jackers, but what a dog he was might have something to do with the mother to the pups aswell cannot just blame the sire Quote Link to post
Autumnbriar 0
I worked for Penny Chenery ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Chenery ), many moons ago.... she was the owner of Secrateriat..... and for the most part most of his offspring floundered, but what she found was if linebred the line did quiet well...... luke 2
i think its all to do with the breeding.if you are going to mate lurcher to lurcher you have got to make sure they are similar in temprement and performance as it is a mistake to try and add some thing to a lurcher from a lurcher especialy from a saluki saturated strain as they are funny animals at the best of times.lucky is the grand father to my pup who is 9 months old and would run through a brick wall to get her game but this might be off her fathers side who is a whippetxgreyhound and would die before he would quit. Border Terrier 0
A stud dog is only as good as what he can produce. If you put a good dog to a variety of good bitches and he doesnt throw anything worthwhile then he cant be called a good stud dog or prepotent I think the correct word? It doesnt matter how good a dog is, if he cant reproduce himself well then theres no point using him over your bitch. Its best to always try to use a dog thats not only proven in his field ie coursing, digging or whatever, but also a dog that has consistently sired good pups with the same sort of qualities he himself possesses. Autumnbriar 0
I'm kinda on the fence on that point, any dog that has provided good sport, put dinner on the table, or fed the kennel several times, is still a valuable dog..... and I also believe a lot is what a person puts into the dog. My last years litter of lurchers of 9 pups 7 were put into working homes and currently all 7 have started, two have gone into pet situations, and one of them is total rubbish, extremely skiddish, and unhandled ... ruined I would say. I think such happens more than enough. Quote Link to post

skycat 6,174
My mother always had a saying "if you see a good dog.....DON'T use him, USE his father" seems sensible to me. Good saying that: having agreed with the statement I have used the son of a dog who was better than his offspring and produced good animals: pups also throw back to the grandparents.
