lamping lurcher 2 1
was wondering if anyone has any knowledge on how young you can start running a lurcher pup on rabbits i have a 15 week old greyhound x whippet and he is walking fine on the lead and coming back to me when being put back on the lead and learning commands quick gets taken out for about 2 hours a night for walks at the minute. was out on a walk the other night with my mate (LAMPING LURCHER) it hadnt long since gone dark and walked over a plot of land local to us and we turned the lamp on to have a quick look and his dog was on a chase instantly mine was still on his lead but took off with it still attached following (LAMPING LURCHERS) dog who was coursing a rabbit. thee undertaker 78
15 weeks old is way too young to run on rabbits bud . . . take the dog out with older dogs to watch . . . i usualy start mine at 10-12 month on easy squatters and work them on to bigger stuff . . . dont give the dog massive slips that are near impossible to catch because you will dis hearten the dog, because if hes chasing an not catching in the end its just gunna think im not chasing them no more because i cant catch em an you will spoil the dog . . . just have patience and enter the dog properly an it will all pay off in the end . . . hope this helps bud . . . atb Quote Link to post

chartpolski 23,322
A puppy running about with it's lead still on, after another dog and a rabbit, at night, is a recipe for disaster !! Let the pup BE a pup, and wait 'till next season to start it, mate. Cheers. Quote Link to post

derbylad1 293
Your pup is too young to even watch "and learn" anything at 15 weeks old. Already stated...let your pup be what it is...a pup!!! Teach it the right things first, recall, stockbreaking are the two most fundamental disciplnes your pup definitly needs to learn, to become a good lurcher. i take it that your "mate" is a bit inexperienced, otherwise he'd be giving you advice as well. Where in Manchester are you mate? I'm only just south of you in Macclefield, your quite welcome to join me at the start of next season. In the meantime keep asking lots of questions on here. Remember we are all learning, no matter how long you've been in the game. Do you know anyone near you that is experienced with lurchers? Also depending on the breeding of your lurcher will depend when he can start in the field. Edited February 4, 2012 by derbylad1 Quote Link to post
