Skip Rats

Recommended Posts

Had an invitation out on a pest control job recently on a farm where rats had very recently moved in and seemed to be taking over.

When we arrived all the signs were there for a good day, but, as with all farms, there were a lot of obstacles along the way, farm machinery, rubbish, tyres and even an old skip.

First marks were on an open piece of land that allowed the rats to be dug out, it was a promising start. From there we moved around the farm, each place being very different, some amongst the farm buildings and some in a load of old tyres but rats kept bolting and dogs kept catching. They worked hard for their rats, in some difficult places, not least was an old skip with a family of rats of all sizes living underneath, this called for some smoke, and later the farmer, whose interest and enthusiasm grew as the day went on, helped out by moving it. This always calls for a lot of concentration when the dogs are working with machinery.. The dogs, being just three, were kept on their toes and made some good catches, none of which I really managed to capture, as is often the case with ratting, this was missed in the frenzy of rats running around and joining in with the action! By the end of the day the farmer wanted to know all about these little red & white terriers, that looked so alike; another convert. All being well, we will be back sometime very soon. A few photos:

We’re keen to introduce our 2 year old Jack Russell to ratting.
We’re based in East Devon. Are there any local groups or anyone that can teach us / her the ropes?

We have a rat infestation and are looking for help getting rid of them.  Our neighbour was feeding rats on thier property (!) and built up an impressive population.  When she stopped feeding them they moved into our stable/barn area and there are now too many for my cat to keep up with.  We don't want to use poison because of our cat and Labrador.  Is there anyone around the Anglesey area with a dog or ferret that can help? Not asking for a freebee  - happy to pay.

Hello, would just like a few pointers from the more experienced members than me on the best way or their particular methods of breaking terriers to livestock? I have a relative that keeps poultry on an allotment that would let me take my pup through, but he’s 5 months now and like most working bred terriers he’s feisty and excited by fur and feather. I wouldn’t want any nasty mistakes to happen so any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
