socks 32,253
It depends on what you are making the kennels out of and what size the sleeping areas are .............. Quote Link to post

redcharge 378
I had galvinised steel sleeping boxes made, raised 4" from the floor, lined them with kingspan and marine ply and they also have a staywell dog flap for access and to stop any draughts. IMHO if they are the correct size, insulated adequately and draught free there's no need for any other means of heating besides the dogs own body temperture. Quote Link to post
FigLurcher 0
Basically going to be a wooden build, size not totally decided on yet but seems i was worrying too much about the cold, Ill make it draught proof with decent bedding and that will do the job! cheers anyway lads Quote Link to post

socks 32,253
A lot of people seem to forget that a running dog in peak winter condition is carrying next to no fat to insulate them and need that extra bit of heat to help recovery after a hard days work when the night is freezing. Very few dogs have the intelligence to bury themselves in the paper or blankets in their kennel and will spend the night shivering which means aching muscles get worse and you have a stiff dog in the morning. A dog that has extra heat and can sleep through the night will come out in the morning far better off. It's one thing to not fuss over your dog to much but it's quite another when you want to get the best out of your dog. I have a wooden sleeping quarter for my dogs but they also have a heat lamp hanging above their bed that's switched on when the weather is freezing and no matter how hard they have been run good grub and plenty of warmth see them ready to go the next morning ............... 9 Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,163
Heat lamps in mine. Especially good after a nights lamping when there cold, wet and muddy. I hose mine down when I get home and it drys them and keeps them warm in no time. Quote Link to post

I insulate with styrafoam, and seem to get along with some straw or marsh grass for beading. Dry and draft free is the main thing to shoot for. This link might give you an idea for what size you might like. (I made mine slightly different with the flaps on the inside door. ) http://leerburg.com/doghouse.htm ATB Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,169
I use heat lamps with two settings for changes in temperature. I also use small insulated kennels and keep two dogs to a kennel and these are deep with shredded paper. Hard working dogs lose lots of energy, why make them lose more fighting the cold? 1 Quote Link to post
