stevethefish 80 Posted January 31, 2012 Report Share Posted January 31, 2012 (edited) Another day out but with a bit of difference, we started the day ferreting using the nets and were on for a bumper day, 11 out of the first 3 small sets on some mounds of soil in the first 20 minutes. Well that was until we got turfed off the land, as it happens this farm yard and surrounding hard standing and the mounds of soil surrounding it had just been sold for a mere 3 million I was told. But we thought we were still ok on this bit, that was until the new owner approached us and asked who gave us permission. He was ok about it and I apologised and we beat a retreat to some nearby hedgerows that I had earmarked for later days. As it happened the land is just at the bottom of the field at the rear of my house so we were in known territory and I watch the rabbits every day so know they are there. We then decided to have a bit of fun bolting the rabbits for the dogs, it's a bit risky close to a road but we knew the rabbits would stay close to the hedge and hole back up. What a great idea for a change, it makes life so much easier not netting up in thick ivy covered hawthorn hedges. We just dropped half a dozen hob ferrets in all over and waited, the ones that bolted the dogs nailed, if they missed them we we just did the ones they holed up in again. If no ferrets showed they had them in a firm hold and they were going nowhere so we dug in seconds. This was working well and the digs were just about 18 inches average (nice) that makes a refreshing change. We did on 3 holer and we heard a bit of hissing from the ferrets and assumed they were just getting a bit pissed off with each other, wrong as it happened. As we started the next set about 10 meters away we saw a rabbit bolt from the 3 holer closely followed by a stoat, that was the trouble, ferrets don't get on with stoats at all and even old gingers a nasty hob wouldn't entertain it. As it happened the rabbit was nailed by the dogs and the stoat holed back up, but a few hard slaps on the hole with the spade made it bolt. Unlucky seeing as there were 3 lurchers sat in wait, albeit the young one that nailed it had the stoat locked onto its jaw for a while. It was another early finish for us today as I had my last days duck shooting to go to, (can't miss that) so we jacked up with plenty of time for me to sort my gear and get there. It was a great day and even though we were pissed off about being turfed off a possible 70- rabbit day land, (gutted) but we still had a respectable and may I say (herm herm ) accurately guessed 42 by me at the start, sorry Stevo. The lads take them back to Sheffield and sell them to pay for the fuel and have a beer, I don't usually bother with any unless I am short of ferret food. Quote Link to post

ATB Cookie Yes Cookie it's easier with a few pairs of hands, especially when we are running the dogs, but sometimes one or two of them are not that bothered and drag their heels a bit. I can't understand what's up with them I'm always keen as mustard, guess it's in you or it ain't.
