privacy in back garden??

Recommended Posts

i've got a 6ft fence on both sides of my back garden, but the back fence is about 5ft. i've planted a row of privet hedging but these are no more than 2.5 feet at the min.

so im looking at getting some trees for on the otherside of my fence as i've got about 2 or 3 feet on the otherside of the fence that is part of my garden.

what tree's would anyone recomend?? i was looking at the silver birch as from what i've been looking at seem easy enough to control / keep to a manageable height. :hmm:

link to site / ebay where i had my privet from seemed cheap 50 for £36

Nothing wrong with Leylandii: just keep them in check. I've planted the golden version. Not quite as manic in the growth department. Just top them at the required height: 8 foot? And trim like a hedge a couple of times a year.

i`ve got conifers all round apart from one part thats 6ft wall i put a row of buddleia in just for a bit of height above the wall -- bought em in at 6ft planted close together they spread well and and give decent cover and a bit of colour and attract loads of butterflies -- conifers are fine if you keep em tidy .. i think buddleia is/was classified as a weed/wild ? my mate dug his up from a railyway embankment ...

I'll give a second vote for bamboo

but also Pyracantha is a good choice for security, great hedging plant

and bloody hurts to climb through lol

Yours sounds like a good spot for fire thorn to me.

The chap who had my house before me planted a pyrocanthus hedge at the back as some people were using his garden as a quick route through to a social club which used to be in the grounds of the convent at the back. It's so vicious that, as long as I trim it a couple of times per year and thread the cuttings into the base, it even keeps out the foxes!

Laurel's good too but not if you want a veg patch close by as it takes all the nutrients for itself.

What about sticking 2ft of trellace along the top of the fence and planting some fast growing climber's something like clematis..i made my own trellace out of several pack's of roofing lath's and it's been up for year's with no sign of rotting or falling to bit's.
