Lurcher jumping

Recommended Posts

My pup was a bit reluctant to jump, Iv put chicken wire across the entrance to her pen and raise it a inch or so every week. She's jumping and even climbing fallen down fences/trees etc now. But watch out, a mate of mines pup has taken the jumping to another level and will now jump up into his ferret hutch, shed and over his 6 foot fence lol

The only worry I have he not found his feet properly so worry bout getting caught or twisting himself cause still telly young the mother was always a natural she just jumped from a young age but this dog I breed seem to be hessating a little

dogs do mature more slowly, the only way he will learn about wire etc to experience it,

I thought I would put this up in case it helps someone

My pup will jump anything around the house and yard up to about 5ft providing it has a solid top but has not taken to jumping wire naturally so I put this together as a way of getting him jumping it and building his confidence slowly. He hated it at first but is slowly getting used to it now.

In case its not clear there is a bungie on the top which can just be moved up as they get better and chicken wire underneath

mine is around 19 week old and has just started jumping by herself last week over a 3 foot barbed wire fence i shit my self jumped over and straight back on the lead.

since then i have been training her in the garden and when out away from barbed wire.

i arranged wooden pole in the garden across two chairs and walk upto the chairs with the lead on and use the words jump sure enough she does.

gettin better all the time she just needs to learn to get a better run up now ;)

Are you REALY using that set up to train a pup to jump ??? Jumping over a chicken wire and bungy cord obstacle, onto pebbles and paving slabs ?? Why not just let the dog jump normal fences onto grass ?

Cheers.

Gravel is a very bad surface for a dog to land on. They risk damaging their toes and spraining their wrists. Concrete is nearly as bad: no give in it, compressed joints etc. I only ever let mine jump from grass on to grass.

Like this: stock wire with the barbed wire tucked down for a 6month old pup to learn on: just under 3 feet in height so no great height to land from on young joints and feet:
