Killed by hounds

Recommended Posts

I see what your saying, I cant really comment on hunting with hounds, but I cant see what the wee dog has done wrong?

Am I just chatting shit and the terrier was asking for it?

Your obviously like me on this topic mate and your personal opinion doesn't matter cause you have little experience in the matter. Facts are if an uncontrollable dog whether it be a hound, lurcher, terrier or any dog killed my dog then it would have the same fate. If anyone thinks thats odd then i find that weird but there entitled to there opinion.

I'm away to my final shoot of the year today and theres a boy there in his 80's who's grown up with the hunt, i'll ask him what he thinks of the situation.

why was the hound or hounds uncontrolable ...and I am a terrier man for a pack of hounds lab so I do have a little knowledge on the topic

this is how I see it the terrier was called rusty ...that gives us a clue to what colour it was ...the lad who started the topic said the the terrier is knowen or allowed to follow his fox after bolting with his own pack ...so I will put it this way if a lad came to our hunt and said his terrier often bolted with the fox and followed the hounds I would advice not to put the dog to ground and did the lad tell all involved that thats what the terrier often did.

No one will put up with a terrier killing hound but if I read correctly the terrier was ontop and the hounds were on so the hounds met an unknowen red terrier in cover smelling of fox its inevitable what was going to happen and imo the hounds should never been put in that circumstances in the first place

Well i asked the old boy the day and heres what he says....No the hounds probably wouldn't be pts...so i was wrong........he also says that the terriers are usually introduced to the hounds so they know what there dealing with and he would bet his bottom dollar this was the case here.

So i hold my hands up for that Moo

But as i said before if it was my dogs then the hounds in question would be pts and do you agree with the other post about t "the guns should pay?".

Why were the hounds on top of the earth anyway?,they should have been held up away a bit anyway and it sounds like the huntsman ain't on his job 100%.Bad old do for sure and sad way to go for a terrie

first of all i dont know the circumstances of this incident and would not blame either party not being present pre ban if a fox was run to ground and terriers were called for the huntsman would conve

The terrier should have been stoped thats for sure but them hounds should get a spade in the back of the head cause if a terrierman cant feel safe around hounds when he devotes his time to the hunt its fxxked. Hounds should be kept under controll at all times!!!!!! Just like any dog their is no excuse for what happened. IMO

I f a terrier is the same colour as a fox the hounds will see it in the exact same shade as they would a fox

We had a red terrier to ground yesterday and in no way would it be allowed to hunt with hounds not just because of its colour but there were a few new hounds out and both spots were in thick whins so while one of us followed the dog while to ground the other were at the entrances to lift the dog .

Instead of nit picking at me read the posts and keep it to the fact s ...

Most of the time you will no when your going to get a bolt so can prepare to lift the terrier and like I have already said it was a strange terrier with a strange pack allowed to hunt on top

Hope that has answered your question Dotty ...now answer mine how much experiance have you with terriers and hounds ?

nope that never answered it, most the time is not all the time, so what about them times when yous dont know, an a terrier comes out on the foxes brush, surely it has happened as you say your the terrierman to a hunt so i should imagine you get a few bolts every season, so what happens when you dont know, does the terrier come find you?? or does it just sit at entrance of the hole the fox has just bolted from?? thats all im asking, not a difficult question, an my experience dont come into it imo, you said your a terrierman an its not on for a terrier to come out an follow hounds, so what do you expect a terrier to do??

pre ban if a fox was run to ground and terriers were called for the huntsman would convey his wishes to the appointed

terrier man hounds would be taken away , AWAY being away if the fox was bolted terriers would be boxed or recoupled

and the hunt would continue , two many people around the earth excited people excited hounds excited terriers, shouting

as the fox bolts :hmm: a tragic out come hope lessons have been learned , and disscusions have taken place to prevent it ever happening again ;)

All terriers are differant ive had terriers that will hunt on and no matter how much shouting it falls on deaf ears ...ive had terriers I can stop with one shout and many inbetween the two .... all my terriers are used to hounds and our hounds are used to my terriers ...the fact of the matter is a strange red terrier smelling of fox was on top 500yards from the earth in cover on the line of a fox that the hounds were on and it was killed ....and there is no huntsman in the country could guarentee there hounds wouldnt do the same

moo hounds that are walked by hunt supporters etc and brought in the correct way to stock in a proper enviroment on a yard were terriers and even cats run free , and are socialised in the correct manner by a hunt and kennel staff should never commit this sin , but in a situation were circumstances as you discribed arise a accident could take place, a pack mentality can be controlled but we should allways remember hounds are hounds and the killer instinct is there the smell of blood can be overwhelming , and a good huntsman should know his hounds ;)
