Just Picked Up An Old Bsa Mercury / Advice Please

Recommended Posts

Hi all :)

After a long absence from the airgun scene , i have just picked up an old .177 bsa mercury from a chap at work. I only collected the rifle yesterday , and overall , the gun is in pretty good condition , apart from a few spots of surface rust on the barrel and a few scratches here and there.

I have been out this morning and fired off a few shots through the chrony with Bisley Practice 7.2g pellets and the results were as follows : Highest 764.5fps / Lowest 740.5fps / Average 753.2fps = 9.7ft11b. Is this power level Adequate for corvid and bunny bashing , or should i spend a few more quid and get the rifle tuned for slightly more power. The rifle is easy and smooth to cock and the recoil is very low too.

I havn't had a chance to take off the stock yet and have a proper look at things , but i have found a number under the barrel near the linkage arm : WC00313 is this the serial number , and if it is can anybody tell me roughly how old the rifle is ,

Regards ,

John

lovely Guns John . had a Mercury as a lad and also the S version. must say back then I had more fun with a Mercury than any other gun but there are some pretty decent springers about these days with Damper systems that make the Mercury look and shoot their age....

one thing I noticed with mine is they had pretty shallow scope groves which suffered a bit with creep, I fitted arrestor blocks on mine and the bloody thing still creeped. its a shame BSA didn't fit some sort of recoil stop and deepen the rails.

all said and done though John that gun you have will be more than adequate to do a job for you as mine was many years ago ..

hmmm 9'5 fp's, 20 yarder hunting, posably 30 if your hot on heads.. perfic ratter though, or even target shooting, i'd prefer 10.5 ish though.

had a loan of .22 years back, really good magpie blatter, but only up to the 20 yard mark.

the "S" version had a bit more clout about it, slightly wider cylinder helped a bit also came with a 12 grooved barrel. Don't ask me what that meant .....

here's was my old one I had when I was a lad, it was offered back to me a few years ago but he was asking silly money which is a shame as I wanted it for sentimental reasons....
