Ratreeper 441
I might be talking bollocks, but if you are looking for a landlord's dog (or were, if the plans have dropped) I personally wouldn't be recommending a hardcore guard dog. You would need a dog people are comfortable around and a visible deterrent to any dodgy buggers. I personally love the English mastiff, but you have all the same problems with the bullmastiff. However, they are big gentle chaps and are more likely to corner an introduer and keep them there (or so I hear) than cause any legal problems...Most guard dogs just need to look the part, most crims are opportunistic and arn't going to risk a dog attack when there are easier options. Swampy, how many rotties have you owned? I am interested why you say they are all unstable, I couldn't disagree more. If you want an example of unstable look at 'toy breeds'
northern boy 0
Gnasher, I sort of see what you mean,….. that’s one screwed up looking dog. I read of one somewhere that attacked a burglar and died of a heart attack half way through, I suppose that’s one way of getting around our dog laws. Some breeders actually believe these pugs could take on a bull, but I’m not about to buy a one way ticket to Frankfurt just yet, mate! not until they start brewing bitter anyway. What do you think of Dobermans and boxers, or American style bulldogs? As Ratreaper rightly points out that a dog deterrent for somewhere like a pub needs to perform guarding and deterrent duties, it dosn’t want to strike the fear of god into Mr and Mrs Mondao when they pop in for a mid-week cheese ploughman. As I previously stated some breeds just have a bad rep, possibly undeserved. I think in the next year or so I will be looking at another pub, and if we forget about the bull mastiff, as by all accounts its a breed thats been ruined, what would be advisable, taking into account all the above?is there any land lords out there that could advise? I Know this is more of a hunting lurcher terrier ect site but its difficult to find a forum that isnt centered around taking pics of there bull terriers wearing sun glasses, or twits bragging about how "game" there pits are. steve123 29
as a deterrant you will be able to find a bullmastiff that does that job, there was a pub on the outskirts of weston super mare that used to breed and show bullmastiffs ,i think it was called the woolpack their kennel name was barrus and they had one in particular that was called donald . he was a lamb in the daytime just slept around the bar area by the fire was good with kids and customers, but during a lock in when the pub curtains were closed and the door locked he would come alive when the door was knocked or window rattled and turnrd into a different animal. i think this type of dog is more suitable as a pub guard dog than most , horses for courses. go and visit a few kennels , dare i say even a few show kennels, there will be a few around with a bit of spark about them but not many as most people just want family pets and could not handle a true guard dog and the consequences of poor training or handling. as i say as a pet come deterrant there would still be some out there .good luck
lietome 138
I've one of Plummers original Alaunts here from the first ever litter, just turned ten ( I think without checking), her makeup is 50% bullmastiff the other half bull terrier and greyhound. I bred her twice with a mastiff dog making the pups 3/4 mastiff and the diffrerence to a full mastiff was unbelievable, their faces tightened up, some had a correct bite though most were level only a couple were undershot. They could jump and were a damn sight more biddable. They seem to be longer lived although time will tell. I personally think the faults in any breed caused by dodgy breed standards could be rectified if a group of commited people with time and enthusiasm and most importantly permanent homes where pups could be monitored had a notion to do it. Some of those Alaunts look the business. Do you have any pix mate? Either the Alaunt or anything they've produced bred with the Mastiff? Cheers Search alaunt mate, plenty of pictures, check out lietome's posts some nice examples there. part mastiff

lietome 138
Awesome looking dogs, lietome What can you tell us about their guarding instinct, suspicion towards strangers, intelligence etc? the big heavy one will guard property and is very protective of my girlfriend he only trusts his family the others only react if a threat is made most of the time they are laid back easy to live with but very easy to switch on
northern boy 0
there some lovley looking Aluntes. I've seen them a few times on this site. There very useful looking dogs. I know they are cross breeds, are they an atempt to recreate the boxer? and is the modern day boxer useful for anything, or have they gone down the same route as the bullmastiff? dws1410 8
To get back to the thread. I think the answer is "no". I do think its a shame when breeds dissapear and from some of the posts on this thread its easy tio see why. Convenience. "when i can guarentee a top class individual from the other breeds in a phone call................ " was one comment Yeah thats what made this country great isn't it. My grandfather had a bull mastiff way before I was born and my mum showed me a picture of her as a toddler riding him. An amazing looking dog that in my opinion has been ruined by the KC. Possibly killed off! Its thanks to folk who do put the time and effort into keeping a breed alive (and fault free) that we have such good working stock now. As for the GSD. Duuring WWII the yanks trained them to attack japanese patrols in the jungle in Malaya and Burma. After a few weeks the dogs stopped coming back to the base. Why? Because the japs started training labs to attack the GSD and they were killing them off. GSD waste of time. Mentally unstable a fraught with problems. Rottweiler. Unstable. I guess we are going to lose a few more breeds in th future. Try looking finding an otter hound. can't pick up the phone for one of those! I hope that we will see a resurgence in the bull Mastiff soon. rgds Swampy bi ning I'm just back from my grandfathers who was stationed in Malaya for nearly 4 years he says in all the time he was there he never seen nor heard about these jap attacking gsd dogs or these gsd killing labradours reckons that story is a lot of pish, he says the only gsd's or what he would call an alsations belonged to the R.A.F and he only ever seen 2 of them although he was never out on patrol with them he heard they where consistant and overall very good but they where not a patch on the sarawaks
