stevethefish 80
When I arranged the latest days ferreting I forgot all about being on a duck shoot later in the afternoon. I explained my predicament to the lads and told them it would just have to be a half day so I had time to get back and ready for the ducks and drive out there. They were not too bothered as I had chosen some relatively easy ground which we know holds a good head and should get the numbers. We got here to see the fields covered with the rabbits, they had chewed off a large area of rape but they soon made a quick exit when they saw us. The dogs had a quick chase but the rabbits were to close to the warrens by the time we got down the slippery muddy track. We did manage to get stuck a couple of times due to the heavy rainfall last night, but with a couple giving it a shove we managed to slip through the mud. As soon as we opened the cages Tilly jumped out and marked the first hole which was about 3 feet away from the van, a good start as we picked up a steady 4 from that one. The rabbits were a little reluctant to bolt, probably due to seeing the dogs as we let them out to do their stuff. We were all in good spirits knowing it would be an easier day than the last couple of trips we had, you need a bit of easy stuff to boost the moral. In the first hour we had 16 in the van even though we had a couple of tricky digs under the hawthorn roots, I must have had too many ciders last night I wanted to dig all the time. We then drove down another track where we ferreted a few weeks ago, we left a few sets undone so were anxious to see if they would produce like the others did last time, we were not disappointed. The next set albeit quite big produced 12 and we managed to let a couple slip the nets, unfortunately this does happen but we always blame Ray for not netting properly......lol Another 3 sets were all we could manage in the time we had, but managed to get soaked by a heavy rain/hailstone shower so we were ready to call it a day anyhow. We were quite happy with the bag for the time we spent on there and still have quite a bit to go at the next time we go on that bit of land. A steady 42 worth a soaking I guess. Quote Link to post
