How Many Chances

Recommended Posts

2/3 strikes if i like the dog, if it fails theres plenty of lads looking for ratting, bushing dogs as long as your straight up with them why your getting rid and you take the time to sift through the peddlars and timewasters

just gave a pup to a lad this week that was too small and clever for my liking.

And add to the evergrowing list of people breeding failed workers?

FTB

pup wasnt a failed worker, just didnt suit me.

there's other factors to consider before u make rash decisions, ie age, is the earth hot or cold, education or how dog was brought up..If the dogs is well educated & doesnt enter by 2 years i thin

being keen and working till dug are two different things two strike rule is nonsense if you ve entered young dogs before and got them too a good standard then there will be wee traits that you see in

Mate of mine ,a professional terriermen and what i consider to be at the top of his game dosnt mess about when it comes to fuckups with terriers walking out and operates a three strike system .He has

Not harsh thats how I go with it if their is fire in the belly, and the proper breeding is their it shouldnt take alot to see if thier keen or not. If they seem keen and aint doing what I want from them its no point keeping a dog that talks the talk and dont walk the walk but each terriermens yard differs. Thats just what i do and it works for me.

so what age do u begin ur '2 strike rule'?

I dont go on 2strikre rule its how I see my terrier work I no my terriers if i see their is potential ill keep him if i see none his gone thats how i roll. it varies but i go on my instinct i no whats in my terriers and what im looking for . Usually 12 months on. Some are gamer little earlier and some later I no when there ready or not.

exactly, i know what u mean now, yea dogs are different some have little interest & some are over eager but dont know exactly what to do @ 12 months so ya hold em back a bit, but ya know urself if a dog needs holding back or a dog himself is holding back.. If ye know what i mean.. Hope that makes sense

Yeah of course. Just we all no our own terriers and what their generation did before. So you can go on that a little, and we all have a certain standard we want our terriers to be. They do mature at different time, I think from my terriers anyway the bitches are more mature and ready to work at usually 12 mths like to be honest and im not gloating but i had pups at eleven mnt smash up big dog foxes and some out a the same litter just wont look at one. But have came across guys trying to tell me im doing wrong leave them till 18 mths tat may be in his yard doesnt mean it has to be in mine.

No mate ur right, i like a dog that starts around the 12 month mark, but i like like to start em early then leave em off for a bit, last 2 pups ive started were april pups (different years) so it was difficult, i gave the bitch something late in the season but the dog started a fresh season @ 18 months, both dug to on the 1st time to ground... Ive a pup here now (also april pup) and im certain if dropped now he'd be dug aswell but doesnt have the mental attitude to cope with any work yet, its about knowing the dog..

It's always nice to have a young hooligan who sweeps all before him, but occasionaly a shy pup can develop into a very useful animal with time and gentle handling, but you have to see something to make you persevere. It's recognising that something thats the hard part.

Good topic,we all have different ideas about bringing on terriers, many factors to consider, breeding, age, dogs temprament, everyone should know when there dog is ready, after rearing the dog to the best of your knowledge/ability and it does not work out,,, there is nothing worse, how many times do you keep trying the same dog, other things to consider when bringing on a pup are what it does when in the ground, thats if it does go..is it sounding away then coming out after x amount of time etc etc,so my answer to your question is,its down to the man who owns the dog to make that decision.unless you gave an instanceof something that happened no one can answer that question, imo
