How do dogs always avoid dog shit, never had one stand in any yet?

The whippet x collie i had back in the 90s, went bananas for deer, but would ignore sheep aswell.

I was out after some bunnys one night, when all of a sudden, my wee lurcher went crazy pulling on the slip, nearly doing cartwheels I swithed on the lamp and their in front of me about 50 odd yds away, was 8 fallow deer.

Nowt i can do, as she was only small, but, a few nights later, i bought my whippet x greyhound back and was more sucsessfull.

Was out lamping bunnies one night with my dog came up the feild to the top and saw a rabbit hadnt realised that there was a group of red deer hinds lying in the corner of the field the rabbit ran straight for them I thought oh sh*t, the deer all jumped up less that twenty yards away from the dog but he ran right through the middle and didnt even look up. Picked the bunnie and proceeded to return to hand. I would never have belived it I was sure he would have went at the deer but he didnt. I know that he must have heard them because they were hiting the deer fence and charging about like mad.

Heres my theory, I think that sheep are used to dogs and humans because farmers use dogs and quadbikes to round them up so even though they run, they are not terrified and dont give off the scent of fear whereas a deer is a wild animal and they are literally fleeing for their lives if a dog is after them, so the smell of the fear or adrenaline or whatever is stronger from a deer and I think they have anal/scent glands under their tails they use for scent marking their territory? so maybe they give off scent from these glands when they are running off which is what draws a dog to them? Its just my theory though, not set in stone

My thinking is that its half instinct and half reaction to ourselves.The way we react when seeing something or dare I say it ,thinking something ,has a large bearing on what my dogs will or wont chase .For those of you that stick to the same walking route ,try this .Think about turning a different way long before you get there and see what happens .Might just be me and my pack ?

When lamping and theres more than one quarry sat together ,think of one specific one and then slip the dog ?.

Done right ,the bond between human and dog is stronger than any other .
