You only get the problem if you dig to them, if you know your terriers working up to a rabbit then walk away and be quiet untill he comes out. If you keep digging to him he'll think it's all in a days

i dont think so mate, not yet! but like dunkanon says 'Wont be the 1st dog to do it and nor the last' i was speaking to well seasoned terrier man and he said everyone has dug to a rabbit and if they s

i checked an old set very big holes it was full a rabbit she walked and found fox 2 fields away.

fair play, shes a better dog than mine

also hes over keen, he'll go down anything which is a more recent thing, he used to sniff the holes and select the holes he wanted to go down if any

hes bin getting some work, hes been dug to 3 times and bolted on in the past 5 outings but quite spaced apart..

try a more experience dog for marking and give him plenty of digging to get him back on track but let him see empty earths aswell or they can get in the habit of thinking every hole you lead them to is occupied

How long was the dog in before you dug him out? Ther was a few times when my dog was young I could have dug to her quicky to get her out of rabbity places but I stood back n let her get bored n come out on her own, was worth it as she went from going down trying to dig into them to having a wee sniff about the hole then just walking past. Dont make a fuss when your around places where rabbits could be just let the dog have a run over the holes, if he dosnt fly to ground on a fox then get him back on the strap asap n walk away. If your dog is keen n knows his job he wont spend much time outside sniffing holes, and if he dose then thats when you get hold of him. JMHO

Heard of a hunt terrierman who dug 4 ft to his dog baying at a cock pheasant this season :icon_redface:

In front of about 10 onlookers :icon_redface:

As long as he/she wasnt baying away like a trooper I would say you dont have much to worry about.

thats proably the problem, im leading him to holes on the lead, i think ill take him off the lead a good distance away, he used to sniff the holes and if nothing was home he would just run on
