just out of interest how much would you have to earn to live in a modest 4 bedroom house and drive a new range rover? £100k+?

20 Kilos a week ..........

And then when you get caught, they take it all off you these days :icon_eek:

Sensible answer is ........ I don't know, my mate works at an LR dealer, he's a tech there, he's said in the past that the majority of the high end vehicles are leased or company owned rather than belonging to a private owner.

It's not just the initial cost that is high, it is the servicing and maintenance costs too, I just put 2 tyres on mine (Discovery) that has the '03 Vogue 18" wheels on, they were £350, and that was the very best price I could find after months of looking, I was going to put part worns on it, but couldn't find any with more than about 5mm on anywhere in the country.

On the plus side, I get all my parts at staff rate, so servicing costs me under £200 a time.

Yes, it was 2 RR Overfinch's........his and hers

That's the difference between the models mate, the RR Sport is the choice of those who haven't got the class to choose a proper Range Rover, the full fat Vogue version, there's a world of difference a

The other big downside to the Vogue is that the dogs make a hell of a mess on the white leather when we go lamping. They reckon the Cayenne is tidy on or off road, but I havnt driven one yet and I kn

Just out of interest Gnasher, which of the older RR would you consider to be a "proper" one?

That Evoque thing just looks like a Freelander that's been left in the sun to me

Hope that didnt sound sarky mate it wasnt meant to be.....maybe pukka as in personal favorites would have been better terminology :D

To be honest i still love those old mid 80,s v8 classics the earlier Rover v8 rather than the Bmw v8,they were everything a Range Rover should be in my eyes.....todays cars are not a patch on them for engineering and style but tech is the times we live in...........i still think them digital watches with a calculator on are great for their day .... but i accept times have moved on :D

As for them Evoque monstrosities.................

No mate, not at all, I was just interested in where you thought LR had sold their integrity, I'd agree with the 80's and early 90's models being the last of the "real" ones, I had a mate who bought a brand spanking new one in 1993, he was told at the time not to switch his (very large) mobile phone on in the vehicle as the signals would interfere with the ABS

It was this shape:

Where have those 20 years gone eh?

Just my personal opinion but I found the Vouge shit to drive, on the backroads of Wales in auto mode it couldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding, had to switch over to semi-auto to get it to go anywhere.

The XC90 and ML are much better to drive.....as I said, just my opinion

Not driven the 4x4 Audi, but the A8 pisses the RR hands down.

Until the tarmac ends surely?

The Merc and Volvo, they aren't really proper off roaders are they? It's when you need it to be a Land Rover that the Land Rover wins.

My uncle has the Q7 band rates it very highly but its just a 'chelsea tractor' no good off road. I'd have to agree with SS and go for a Range Rover everytime.

What do people think of the Lincoln Navigator and the escalade?

They reckon the Cayenne is tidy on or off road, but I havnt driven one yet and I know for a fact the dogs dont go in the back of a 911

I wouldnt class either of them as proper RR's in todays era.....times move on id say the Revere is an improved version of the Sport and the Overfinch is an improved version of the Vogue...............both are totally different class to their older counterparts in my opinion.

Overfinch is an after market RR approved re-furb isn't it? it is also available on the sport model too

Also StrongStuff the vogue is mediocre if your after class you need to be looking at the Range Rover Autobiography Supercharged, if its speed you need then opt for the limited edition 5 litre Cosworth tuned engine, Style and speed Feckin MEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW :toast:

I know what i would spend my benefit's on

Yes mate, Overfinch is basically an aftermarket styling/tuning firm, yes they do do conversions to both models.

It was the difference in models I meant really, not so much the trim edition, personally I think the Sport is a bit common, but then I can't afford either so that makes me even more common!

I hadn't seen that 5.0 litre engine, just looked on the LR site:

http://www.landrover...d-performances/

That's some engine for sure!

Hopefully more reliable than any of the older petrol engines ...........

Wilf ive driven one of those Audi Q7 Quattro things they,re plenty quick enough and have every gadget youd want....there basically a big lazy v8 that drives like an a8.......i found they was a horrible driving position though,im a big lad so need a bit of room i couldnt imagine a long motorway journey in one.....i think theres about half a ton difference between them and RR so prob not much quicker if you take that off.

If you are really talking about off road, then the best thing I ever drove was a series 3 ex military Land Rover with skinny military wheels on it, second to none off road and simple to operate.........Winkhound will attemp going places in a Defender that will have you on the valium in two minutes flat, but I still think the S3 would do it better.

That said, my pal L200 with decent tyres aint too sore and the same could be said for the Fourtrac
