stock breaking a 14month old lurcher possible?

how would i go about this,is it a clear cut training process? seen a cracking dog for sale because its got bad recall and 'might' go for sheep/cattle, which is obviously a big concern for any lucher especially my first! has takn r/h/f ( im in northern ireland so all legal)

 

Im sorry mate but im afraid you havnt seen a cracking dog for sale. If its got poor recall and 'might' go for cattle and sheep, then where i'm from that type of dog is termed a pot licker.

I'm not saying you wont be able to turn the dog around, but the negatives far outweigh the positives with this dog

I wish you all the best if you take it on, but you would be better starting from scratch with a raw pup(more so since its going to be your first lurcher).

this dog could cause u alot of problems and get u in to alot of trouble stay away best advise i can give,a dog that has not been trained properly will sicken you as a first dog

Some dogs can be lethal around sheep and almost impossible to steady. We want a high prey drive, but case- hardening of a strong, dominent type dog by inappropriate or mis-timed punishment by a poor, weak handler can't be corrected by an e-collar. Despite the claims of the RSPCA, the kick it gives is nothing to a dog with it's dander up! I once saw a Springer running in on a Pheasant being 'corrected' by a collar, what a joke! It didn't bother him except to make him chase harder! A more sensitive dog might respond, but why take on a problem? atb if you do decide to give the dog a chance mate.

used to have ex track greyhound, was told i can never let him off the lead cos he will run off and kill small dogs and anything he can catch, 10 days later out in the forest off lead, another 10 days walking around ponys and cows off lead. even had him chilled out at my mates house with a cat in the room. it can be done. ps,, got my jackrussel at 7 weeks three years ago and still cant trust him with anything. lurchers are alot easier. thay usaly want to catch, trick is showing them what. as with recall should improve when you bond

yes we all know it can be done but maybe not ideal for a first lurcher

my own pup of 8 mths will stop dead in her tracks to the whistle.ive been walking thru sheep pens and hen shed throughout her training

it will be interesting to see will she still carry on these lessons when she starts to get to grips with coney.by the way shes a bull x

thanks for all the help, think ill just keep looking for a pup from proven parents unless an adult dog comes up with a trial and i get to see it work, as somebody said i dont want to sicken myself with my first lurcher
