robwelsh 354
yeah i also heard that .22's get affected just as much as .177, due to slower speed and larger surface area...il stick to my girly calibre as some would say Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
The .22, given the exact same pellet shape and material, will suffer less wind deflection. Yes, the surface area is greater on the .22, but the volume increases much faster than the area, (a square relationship) so the mass per unit area is much higher, so inertia is bigger and deflection is less per unit time. Of course, the .177 will spend less time en route at the same energy level (it's much faster because of the lighter weight to produce the same KE). The blunt fact is there is NO simple relationship between caliber and wind deflection. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Matt the facts I gave are correct. Only 1,3 grains between the two would mean that the .22 pellet has less mass per unit area! The ,22 pellet being a lot bigger than the .177! As a rough approximation the .22 has 35% more surface area. Therefore the weight increase of 12% is more than swallowed up by the surface area increase of 35%! zini 1,939
Assuming that is a question mate, the simple answer is no,they are faster, flatter, and penetrate further, and in over 30 years of shooting air rifles to centerfire,I like to think I have learned a thing or two,.177 drops more quarry stone dead than .22, in a 12 ftlbs rifle of course I cant really see the point in the post as its splitting hairs and there will always be pro's and cons for each calibre and peoples opinions will sway both ways but I don't agree with the above mate, sorry . Please explain why you think this apart from shooting for 30 years, what else is the reason (science wise)? A .177 or .22 in the KZ is a dead quarry full stop and if the shot is released correctly and all is taken into consideration the shot should impact in the KZ (dead quarry). A .177 missing the KZ and hitting body cavity over 50% of the time means a straight through wounding and a slow death or the animal spinning around in a circle taking minutes to die unless you get a second humane shot impact depending. A .22 missing the KZ over 50% of the time means a contained pellet impact point depending so(full kinetic energy being applied to the quarry and max shock) = bigger entry wound and more internal damage caused than a .177 causing a death quicker even in a missed KZ shot. Do a stopping power test and watch the results between a .177 and .22 in sub 12. I bet you the .22 causes more damage. Maybe you find you shoot better with a .177 mate which I could understand and that's why you think a .177 kills more quarry dead. Hitting a 40 yard rabbit with a .177 zeroed at 35 yards in good conditions isnt the hardest shot in the world and is pretty much a cross hair shot (your still just within the KZ), 1/4 mildot hold over on x 6 to shoot reticle true. Now try a x 6 shot from a 27 yard zero in .22 at 40 yards when your miles out the KZ and require 1 mildot holdover or you miss or wound. This is why people think a .177 drops more quarry. Si. The Duncan 802
I love the way a Tongue in cheek thread can lead to lots of airgundogs chasing their tails ad nauseum, with largely irrelevant minutiae. Quote Link to post
