hok boi 40
right guys, before i start training the pup i was wondering your thoughts. should i train him to jump????? my opinion is no, i know i will lose some quarry, but i wont be at the vets with a dog thats torn to bits with a barbed wire fence. paulus 26
how are you going to train it not to? jumping is as natural to a lurcher as shitting Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,147
If the dog jumps properly, you won't have many vet bills. What about it hitting fences when the quarry goes thru' ? Surely it's better to jump than try and run thru' ? I think jumping is essential for a Lurcher. Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post

stabba 10,745
I,d say a fair old percentage learn to do it themselves . I would never dream of discouraging a dog from learning the art. I,d say there are more injuries to dogs from not being able to jump than then are from those than can...but its your dog and your back mate..atb stabba 2 Quote Link to post
RossM 8,119
to jump, all day long, aswell as the hassle of lifting the dog over fences, imagine the feeling of watching your quarry going over/through/under a fence with a whole other field to go, caught in no mans land but the dog just standing there or running up and down the fence line instead of pinging over the fence and keeping the pressure on and perhaps making the catch. had a mate whos dog wouldnt jump or walk through water, frustrated the life out me. 1 Quote Link to post
tomano1 80
Ye bud like every one has said learn it to jump make a hurdle and make it higher and build it up ATB Quote Link to post
jf1970 328
i think the dog will either jump or it won't, yes you can train it to jump, but in my opinion if the dog can see an easier way it will use it. Still handy to have it jumping when need be though. Quote Link to post
hok boi 40
al be honest..... i never even gave the idea that my dog might hit a fence during a chase a second thought, and the fact hes likely to make about 27" would carry a lot of weight towards a collision. might be time to rethink my logic i think lol Quote Link to post

Guest born to run1083
All my lurchers I've ever owned have always jumped and never been to the vets due to wire, as said if it learns to jump properly most never have a problem Quote Link to post
salclalin 240
A Working Lurcher needs to be able to Jump any Obstacle it Encounters in the Field. 2 Quote Link to post
