brace of woodies and a squirrel.

went out again this morn to try the owl decoy, and the magpie decoys. on arrival at the permission, the manager pointed a squirrel out. its was sat on a big bough in a tree 35 mtrs away. i was just getting togged up and ready to go, but kept my eye on it just in case it shifted position. anyway after getting suited and booted and rifle out of the slip the silly bugger was still there. sat side on to me offering the perfect shot. i leaned up against the trunk of a tree, got steady, lined the cross hairs up, and down it came. perfect start.

i carried on through the gates around the building, and i could see 4 woodies sat in the top of a big ancient tree. i crept up to a big scotts pine to give me some cover, but soon realised i couldnt find a clear path through the branches. i had to stalk out into open ground to enable myself to get a shot off. i took a couple of really slow careful steps into the lawn, and 3 pigeons took flight, leaving the 1 i had my eye on. i couldnt risk getting any closer to it. so down on 1 knee, adjust for the elevation, and bingo. this is my finest shot ever. straight through the back of the head and out of the top.

i have been practicing a lot of elevated shots over the last few weeks, and its really paying off now. a few weeks ago i would probably have not taken the shot, not being confident enough to make a clean kill.

the squirrel and the woody both in the bag after 10 mins, the omens where good for a decent day. so i got into my little hide, and waited and waited some more. a couple of pheasants came and went, but i wasnt interested today, they will keep for another day.

just as it was about to go dark, i heard some flapping behind me, so i slowly moved round and could see a pigeon moving about in the branches, then another came into view, then a third. the 3 that took flight earlier.

2 hopped around the trunk, and the third craned his neck down as far as it could to nibble on the ivy. i very slowly raised the hw 100, and gave it 1 and a half mil dots because it was at such a steep angle, and dropped it out of the branch. it was dead on hitting the floor.

so in the last week i have taken a crow and 2 woodies that a few weeks previous i probably would not of been able to take a shot at. ,y confidence has grown, and cant wait to get out again.
