Swampy 147
Listening to Bob Dylans Hurricane and thought I'd google Rubin Carter. Very Interesting story. A story that would appear to be another example of Hollywood distortion and one that Mr Dylan was perhaps hoodwinkedd too. Does anyone remember the case? He was supposedly a good boxer and was a middleweight contender for the world title. Or is that just Mr Dylans take on it. Be interested to hear from anyone who can remember. gnasher16 30,046
Nothing to do with Hollywood distortion mate Carter was a very good fighter fought Emiile Griffith for the world title, also lost to Dick Tiger both legendary names of that era......theres a film about him played by Denzel Washigton who plays the part real well so im told......he was given an honourary belt by the wbc after his release.....im not even sure if he,s still alive to be honest he,d have to be in his late 70,s i only know what ive been told by folk old enough to remember. antg 1,765
the film is a good watch. "The Hurricane" Denzel Washington play a very good part in it.
Swampy 147
Thanks guys. Have done a bit more research...........Slow day at work.....Appears he was let out of jail on a technicality, and was never cleared of the murders. Hence no big lawsuit payout by the state. Very dubious case. Boxing rankings though according to "ring side" magazine at the time thehighest he got was #3.and his form was a 7-7-1 and going down hill. He also lost his eye in prison from another prison punching him. he got a detache retina that became infected. Still reading a lot of the case. From what I've read of the docs so far it looks like he did do the crime and he played the racist card like OJ. He also lied about his activist connections and his military career. When I've finished might check out the film and see how accurate it is. Hope its not another "braveheart" job Thanks again Swampy Ningin and avoiding work
gnasher16 30,046
Boxing rankings though according to "ring side" magazine at the time thehighest he got was #3.and his form was a 7-7-1 and going down hill. That cant be right mate you dont get world title shots with a 7-7-1 record at a guess id say he probably had 40-50 fights winning a lot more than he lost otherwise why get a title shot i know he was beaten by Emille Griffith quite easily.......but he was a good fighter no doubt about it.......i dont know much about his case but i cant see the wbc honouring a known murderer so must of been enough reason to think he was wrongly convicted......but like i say i dont know the ins and outs. Got me curious now think i,ll try and give the film a look Edited January 20, 2012 by gnasher16

Attack Fell Terrier 864
From what I've read he was a thug type who didn't really give a shit about nothing or nobody. He tried to pull this Black civil rights sort of image (Which in the 60's was a big thing in America). Being a black icon he's been given a pass by most and this story of an innocent man being wrongfully convicted has made quite a few people quite a few pennies. I read in The Boxing News a few years back that when he fought over here, he brought a pistol into the country illegally. A Chamber maid found the pistol in his hotel room and through dropping the gun it discharged a round. Carter was questioned about why he had a gun and was told about the incident and all he asked was "did the bitch get hit?" When they told him "No she wasn't injured", He's meant to of replied with "Thats too bad!". Sounds like a real piece of shit IMO.

Swampy 147
Thanks Lads. I knew that more info would come out. I'm not massive boxng fan myself, but the stats 7-7-1 that I quoted were direct from "ringside" I'm not standing by them or anything just trying to get to the bottom of it. Interestingly...... Dylan quotes in his song that it was an all white jury. However the docs stae that there were two blacks on the jury that the prosecution did not argue against when it came to selection. Testimonies have changed a lot. There were two trials,......Just checked and Dylans song was written before the 2nd trial so his quote in his song is accurate. Can't help thinking that they were perhaps over zealous in trying to nail him which is why the race card may have been played. I haven't read Rubins book but apparently corroborates the story that testimonies changed. Namely a guy named Dextor who got sentenced for another crime admitted that Rubins was there at the scene. I'm lovin this as it unravels. Wasted a lot oftime on it though. Dogs looking proper pissed off with me! Thanks again Swampy Ning Ning round three
gnasher16 30,046
Just out of interest lads i was talking to an old boy at West Ham today, proper old school he is,still says " allo boy " when he sees me ....he used to reel off stories about my ol fella when he was fighting and has a memory for fighters like nobody ive ever known....i asked him what he knew about Rubin Carter..........well i didnt realise he fought in London twice in the 60,s apparently he had just lost a world title shot and they was getting him fights around Europe to get him better known well the first fight he had at the Royal Albert Hall London was a controversial ending so he said he would fight the same opponent again " next month " to prove he was the better man kind of thing....so he stayed in London for a month but lost the return bout on points !.......turns out the Krays and other such little mobs were supplying him and his entourage with " women of the night " and showing him a good time so he was basically partying the whole time between the 2 fights......and of course he eventually lost the return...... supposed to be a nasty bit of work by all accounts, treated the women like shit and generally detested anybody white !...... The ol boy was telling me about an old friend of my fathers Vic Andretti who was a very good up and coming fighter at the time he was on the same bill as Carter both fights it turns out Carter humiliated Vic infront of a lot of other fighters but nobody was willing to front up to Carter because he had about 20 other raving looney blacks shouting and hollering about black power and suchlike.......stuff whites in England just didnt really know anything about at the time..........so seems to me Rubin Carter certainly wasnt a nice man........dont make him a murderer of course but who knows. Anyway just thought id share the tale with you chaps
