DogFox123 1,379
A deerhound bitch called Coranach Luckpenny, used to wipe the floor with every saluki she ran against, But, overall, I dont think there was much in it, and the competition went quite away back..could probably find out what the totals were..the Saluki club also had a day meet on the Lammermuirs, best dogs in that era on them stages were probably Paul Sagar`s stuff, thats PS (1) as there was another from Durham I believe. But on saying this, its a deerhounds stage, they are designed to run on long heather, and their loping stride takes them across it decivingly quickly at times, deerhound agaisnt a saluki on the fens, I would be putting my money on the saluki most of the time. When Ive been involved on the moors we spent more time getting the salukis back off the moors than watching courses....by the way, we are talking proper coursing deerhounds and salukis here, not show stuff, although there were some dogs of both breeds that did well on both.. So the good old deerhound was the dog to beat on the hills? Were they slipped single handed and what decided who was the winning dog? You'd have thought that the salukis loping style which is easy on the feet would have prevailed Quote Link to post

You'd have thought that the salukis loping style which is easy on the feet would have prevailed Not necessarily, Ive had lurchers that would kill a lot more than any deerhound, and yes, on the hills.. a decent lurcher will always beat a good deerhound in most situations..but it is what they are designed for so they have a head start on a lot of dogs...They were slipped under NCC rules, with a NCC affiliated judge, whos`s decision is final...Peter on the photo is a greyhound coursing man and judge..deerhound coursing also went on on the fens, and other parts of the country, again, under NCC rules before the ban this gave people who wanted to keep the deerhound a working breed something to do. Sometimes it comes down to temperament when coursing in what is regarded as tough places.. Edited January 22, 2012 by Romany Quote Link to post

mackay 3,363
Had some good days on the hills with deerhounds too.... The best way to spend a day is walking the hill with your dogs. Romany did you ever run into the old dear Anastacia Noble of Ardkinglass fame. Quote Link to post
