Talking to farmers

Recommended Posts

I have not read it all, but at the end of the day, most of the time it's who you know and not what you know.

There is a HUGE number of folk all competing for a reletivly small amount of land and game / vermin.

And in some areas you might as well try knitting snot, as its all estate land etc.

Finally - i know you say that this is a logical place to ask for permission . . . . how so, it is a sight FULL to the brim of folk WANTING permission, so it's unlikely any will come up.

However, i have enjoyed many many days hunting out on different land, through folk i have met on here

Hello folks,   this is really something that is hot on here, from what i can see permissions are the top topic of a lot of the posts ( annoying people take the mic out of people asking for permissi

2 more things -

You asked about time of day - in my opinion it's important, avoid milking time if its a dairy area, and generally avoid tea time etc, and sundays, as most farmers just want to put their feet up and be left a lone. I usually go either mid morning / lunch time / mid afternoon. I also make sure i have some cards, and if they are busy, just drop a card and say call me if you ever have a problem. or i wll pop back in a few days and see if i can catch you etc.

99% of my permission has come through word of mouth or being able to name drop.

Finally - you say you are surprised farmers dont want to be more pro active. What tends to be the case is - if it is an area with a very high level of vermin etc, either they know they can sell the rough shooting rights, or frankly they realise a lad with an air gun popping up once every week or few weeks just isnt going to do much good, and for what they get out of it would rather not have guns about the place. Or, they simply dont have enough vermin etc for it to be enough of a worry to let a lad wander about with a gun.

Firs off I respectfully hear what you are saying and I do believe there is truth in its what you know not who you know. However that said I do feel maybe you have lost the point some what in what i am trying to convey to my audience here. You seem to laugh somewhat at my logical place to ask for shooting rights is this not a site full off people who have one similar goal and aim... the enjoyment and passion for the sport and country side. OK there will be many cynics, who think that they carn't trust to take folk or that you should get off your arse and find your own. This only serve to hold the sport back and potentially let vital skills be lost to the next generation. My self I currently am in my final year of uni and see my self as a bright MAN, what i wanted from this topic was how to approach what to say tip hints and skills... its ok word of mouth for senior shooters, who have the credibility but maybe a bit of help from the older guys; and i must say i have had a lot of offers and am off out tomorrow with a member. This sport will not progress and grow... I hope you can maybe see my point, I have a valued rule for life which is you can buy buy talent but experience is worth more ten times over.

Kind Regards

Mr. G. Dace ( pleases excuse grammar and spelling )
