How many moles?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've been asked by a local in my village to try and trap the moles that have wrecked his garden. I have used a tunnel trap and 3 scissor traps and on the first night (last night) caught one in the tunnel trap. There are approx 25 mole hills ranging from small to one massive one and I wondered how many moles were likely to be in this area? The garden is approx half an acre and all of the hills are in roughly the same area

ps Trap was straight out of the box and not weatherd

Also depends how long the hills have been there some of them may be new but many may be old, so you can never judge by the hills in a place you have never been before.

I always rake away the hills after setting the traps, so i can see if they are still active and where.

Thanks. The hills are all quite fresh by the look of them. The local church asked me to sort their moles a few months back and set 5 traps and raked all the hills and didn't catch a thing and no new hills came up but they thought i did a great job. I can tell that these hills are much fresher and to catch on the first night is good surely

I went up to my local church to collect the mole traps i set on saturday morning, i would of guessed there would only be one/two working as there cant of been more than a dozen fresh mole hills but when i went up tonight to pick up my four traps i set the first trap i checked (talpex) produced a mole looked like i caught him saturady night didnt look fresh fresh, then went to next two traps and they were empty so gathered was just the solo mole working but when i checked my last trap (Trapline trap form Steve Albano) i had a double one from each direction, the one mole was fresh still warm and the other was probably from yesterday, shocked me but perhaps the fresh one had just moved in to what he thought was a vacant site until he met my trap :icon_eek:.

At this time of year there will only be one mole per territory! Just look for how many territories there are and you can easily estimate the number of moles. Spring is a little different as it mateing season

It depends on there area and local mole numbers to how long a reinfestation may take but it is usually over a month!
