Home made or shop brought nets??

Hi,

 

i am fairly new to the ferreting game and need to get hold of some nets, a mate gave me 10 of his old shop brought ones as he now makes his own and no longer has a need for them. the keeper i work with also makes his own and recons their much better better, i was just wondering whether it is is better to go to the trouble of making your own nets or are the just as good if you buy them??

Always have made my own that way i make the nets to the spec that suits me there are net makers on this site (look at top of home page) that sell well made nets at a good price if you don't want to make your own

What ever you decide to do mate don't buy them cheap cr*p bisley 4oz nylon things they are cheap for a reason and that's cos there rubbish GOOD LUCK WITH THE FERRETING MATE

Hi jack ask the keeper or your mate to show you how to make your own purse nets or if you find making nets is not for you then you could buy some off someone that makes there own there was a post that had net makers that lads had recommended i am sure you will find someone to sort you out. beat me to it max lol

Far better making your own nets you get the width your after i find shop bought one are far too narrow and sometimes the knot slips

Bisley ones are shite, got some off netrigger and started making my own, and now I can tell even the poke nets I bought from bridport are inferior to home made. Home made all day long.

Bought nets can be top quality bud

try Mick Dadd, or netrigger seemingly makes top nets as well.

 

Or do what I did,, get yer missus to learn net knitting mate,,

It all about time and money for me if you only want 20 to 50 nets then buying from a good supplier is the way forward.

I like bridport nets myself I like you started out with a handfull of nets and over 20 years have accurred nets most of my oringnal nets are still in use.

 

So a good net that is well looked after and repaired will last a years so to go forward and buying a load of net making gear is maddness if you only going to spin a few nets .

 

Still its a good hobby to learn and a dying trade for young to do so in there area I would encourage you to learn off the old boys who make them.

never bought a net in my life never will make them its easy even some hopeles cases can do it ,first shop bought nets i got were shitty nylon as kids theywere tripe , learned as youngsters 13 14 year olds and progressed from there made twenty this season not that i use them much but handy

time and money a 3foot 6inch net in 10oz nylon will cost roughly 70p in material. time is free, it takes 30 to 40 minutes to make a net. i use to always make 1 everyday normally in the evening, you can do both make a net and be on here thats 365 nets a year more than enough for even the most ardent ferreter

Halfhour of my time would outweigh what i could earn could buy more that one net x times over.

I did say for me not you just giving the lad a diffrent outlook on the subject

Aye we probably earn more in the forty minutes it takes to make a net than to buy a net but its a great feeling using a nice net youve made yourself . and the buzz when a ferret you have breed yourself bolts the rabbit .

 

And a good hand made net well looked after will last years and catch loads of rabbits ,when the shop bought crap has long given up the ghost
