Vasily Grigoryevich Zaytsev was a sniper and killed around 225 germans. Appart from that the rest is fiction. There's no evidence to suport the thing with the German Major.

I also believe Vasilies Girlfreind died during the war and Zaytsev lost partial sight due to a mortar attack.

the german major is fiction but he did have a duel that lasted days and when zaytsev shot him and took his tags,he found out that he was the head insructor of the berlin sniper school

Think he won it in the end by circling around so the sun was behind him and blinding his enemy??

on the DVD there are some extras including documentarys about the russian snipers war efforts and also an interview with Zaytsev probably done in the 60s. The documentary mentioned the german sniper but i think they were just not 100% on his exact name or precise background,

Obviously been hollywooded to death though but some of it genuine

The guy he was supposed to have killed was called Thorvald or Konig (both names exist in the Russian records) but from what I've read there's no evidence in German records of this person. That isn't to say Zaysev didn't have a 3 day battle with a top sniper but there is no evidence to say this person existed either, if they had the dog tags then surely they would be able to confirm this. German military records were generally very thorough. I find the story hard to believe because of the Russians propoganda, they are masters of fiction when it comes down to stories of the war.

yeh the program that came with the film was fairly vague on exactly who it was but i think that the 'battle' happened over some sort of river bed with the german getting shot on the 3rd day. If now adays they are not sure who he was it is very unlikely that at the time the russians had a clue who he was just made something up to suit. It also never said anything about dog tags being collected. I know that the whole battle was 99% embelished for the purposes of russian propergander at the time.
