Hey up folks....just wondering when you will be hanging up the lamp/slip leadand giving the dogs a wee break now we are heading towards the seasons end? Do you have a set date when you call time each seasons end or do you wait until you come across your quarry carrying young etc? ATB Andy. ;)

we got 12 today,3 full of young.

this morning was the first HARD frost weve seen. ive only had about 4 trips out with the ferret as waited till the cover died back. short season for me. only got a couple of trips left and there ones that i have to do for a guy to clear certain hedge rows, which ive been putting off till the proper frosts get here!

as for lamping, ill still be going out for a while yet as the dogs dont take that many if im honest but not while the ground is frozen solid like the last couple of days.

I don't realy "finish" as such. I'm always up to something, even if it's just running a rabbit or two when I'm fishing. Obviously , nothing like the work the dogs do in the "normal",winter season, but there's always something to keep them occupied !

Cheers.

Yep some sound replies here..if the dogs have seen a bit over the past few months they as much as anything need a wee break to heal the knocks and tears they've aquired over the winter months whilst running...part and parcel of good dog maintainance is knowing when to give a dog it's break as its as important as the running when it comes to good stockmanship in running dogs? As Moo said really. But i do have one single piece of land i go at for longer. I am only allowed on when the shooting season has finished, it is a rough field managed for the game birds. So from the end of Jan, till they start planting the new game cover i will be at it, slowly but surely.

Other than that, just general mooching about the place, no deliberate hunting.
