Scotland independence referendum

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

so it looks like a referendum is on the cards for scottish independence. Strange really as the poll results i've heard indicate that only 1/3 of scots actually want independence.

So why do some scots want to be a separate country? N Sea Gas all used up, so no revenue (that used to be a reason).

Answers from scots please!!!

Is Wales next?

ATB current UK compatriots :)

Duncan.

I certainly don't think the major issues are now about rescources or revinue, the goalposts have moved?? Cameron himself has become a recruiting sergant for Independance by telling the Scottish goverment and people what they can and can't do! with regards to a referendum on Scottish independance The tories have no political mandate in Scotland and never will neither do the Lib/Dems I know its been said as a joke but it's true (they're are more Panda's in Scotland than Tory Msp's) The "right" to hold a referendum may reside with Westminster under Westminsters own rules but the right to self determination of governance is a basic human right that cannot be legalised against. As such, any action to impede or deny the people of Scotland a right to vote would be in contradiction to the obligations to uphold self determination as si...gned and agreed by the UK as part of the UN Charter. Article 1 in both the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) both read: "All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development." The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 15 states that everyone has the right to a nationality and that no one should be arbitrarily deprived of a nationality or denied the right to change nationality. The International Court of Justice refers to the right to self-determination as a right held by people rather than a right held by governments alone. United Nations studies on the right to self-determination set out factors that give rise to possession of right to self-determination: * a history of independence or self-rule in an identifiable territory * a distinct culture * a will and capability to regain self-governance Scotland is a distinct country with our own traditions, national dress, borders, health service, legal establishment, education system, flag and a history of nationhood that was not discarded by the Act of Unions in 1706 and 1707. These were international treaties and once signed the UK government came into existence and the Scottish and English Parliaments were suspended. Please note that they were not disbanded, merely suspended. The countries still exist and upon creation of Devolution the Scottish Parliament at least was reconvened. So we can demonstrate before any referendum is held that we have a history of independence in our own identifiable territory, that our culture is unique and in fact unique enough to be recognised around the world instantly, and that through the Scottish Parliament we have the capability to regain self governance. At the end of the day it will be the will of the Scottish Electorate that will decide the outcome for Scotland. If a majority of the votes cast are for Independence then the people have demonstrated the will to regain self governance.

If Scotland think independence from the union will make them somehow more Scottish then they ain't living in the real world as it stands now they elect and govern most of their own issues but if independent would undoubtably join the eu and then be governed by some French belgian or German they never heard of never mind voted for. We should be keeping the union stronger while the eu let the financial crisis get worse so they can say only way to solve it is more powers to Brussels and more integration as they can't get it through the ballot box so making things worse to get what they want

How on earth! does Independance somehow make you more Scottish? If the majority of Scot's want Independance in 2014 why not give us it? why hold onto us? Canada, India, Australia and the rest of the commonwealth countries have all got there Independance!! why deny it to Scots and Scotland? Why are we needed so much!!! is the rest of the UK dependant on us? Is the rest of the UK scared of going it alone??

I will probably weep!! but like the Wee Spider in the famous story about Robert the Bruce we'll try, try, try again!! i sincerely believe Scottish Independance will come!! Two things completely piss me of about certain types of Scottish nationalism, first is, all the anti-English shite the half-wits spout!! and secondly, some people don't know the difference between nationalism and republicanism? I still believe in the Queen being the scottish head of state and maintaining close links with the rest of the UK especially England where I have some real close friends and itwill always be one of the most welcoming place's in the world to vist!!

i was listening to an mp been interviewed i think he was a tory he said alex salmond is regarded as one of the shrewedest operators across europe, salmond knows that two thirds of scots dont want to leave the union for many reasons some dont want to change to the euro some believe that staying in the union gives them more strength to resist issues forced on them by europe and some are just comfortable and dont like change of any kind, the one thing that will happen and i think salmond knows it and is in fact really aiming for it is that scotland will get much more power to run their own affairs ie setting their own tax rates and if he achieves this he will regard it as a good job done.
