well dont know about your dogs but if i threw a dummy for mine full of pins or barbed wire i doubt it would go for it again unless they were totally thick lol, if he just gives the catch to dogs and ferrets it does not matter.i heard of someone with a dummy with cocktail sticks in to train a retriever but i wouldnt do it

this must be the worst bit of advice i have seen on THL. :icon_eek: don't know about a dog going from hard mouthed to soft, if anyone has done this, it would be interesting to hear of their training method.

pups or young dogs can be over egar,,,,u train them to hunt ,,,,they hunt

1st one not unusal to be killed,,,,2nd 3rd 4th and so on and on ,,,,after a while ,,,they bring live to hand

but then ,,,they might never retrive live to hand,,,,,,is it a big deal ?????? NOT REALLY

from my experience what i have seen over the years. over eager pups killing then coming on ok after the initial excitment wears off. saw dogs become hard mouthed after becoming tired at the end of a night finding it easier to kill them instead of bringing a struggling rabbit to hand. saw some soft mouthed on rabbits when started on hares start to kill them. a hare is altogether a more powerful bigger animal than a rabbit. saw some dogs start off hard mouthed and stay that way all their working life, i owned 1 myself that was this way.

Thanks for replies

Just an update. Mate has picked up dog, howled in kennels non stop so he brought him in house where he was clean and quiet.. Very timid and unfit which is a shame, hopefully he'll come good. Here he is.

He doesnt' respond to his name at all so he's gonna rename him and try to start again with him from scratch. .?

hard mouth is a trainig fault and breeding, and can happen if you work dogs loose in pairs trios especailly if there high prey drive ,but have saw and owned generaitions of soft mouthed dogs even some saluki crosses that will nash a fox etc soft on rabbs one dog one man for to keep a soft mouth dog is best, but had a few pairs who never crabbed each others rabbs , just the way it was ,the way to keep soft mouth is the training with dummies when young never ever let a dog play with stuff and espeaily the dummy quick fast reteives and no playing to generate gripping and getting wound up , learned many years ago of a mate who one the cocker trails at sandrinham , a good dog man , and never run adog to tired as some will grip harder to finish the rabb off

what training fault can generate hard mouth. any dog i have owned were started on dummies. they were all trained on there own no other dogs present. never allowed to play with dummies. the lurchers i owned were good sort mouthed retrievers collie crosses and saluki lurcher cross collie lurcher. 1 i had in the eighties a beardy 1/2 cross crushed the 1st rabbit he caught and every one after. the last 1 he caught was when he was 11. he was trained no different to any of the others.why was all the others soft mouthed and he was hard mouthed.just a case of being naturally hard mouthed?
