jasper65 6
I know this one has been done to death but whats your opinions on this. had a few conversations while out with lads Hawking and it seems its pretty divided, been out with some small Gills the other week and have to say they worked extremly well and shifted alot of Rabbits out of the Warrens. in the past all I have ever worked are Basically a tame polecat type mixed with Ferrets, some of the Hobs are pretty large and seem to make alot more kills below ground. I have a pole cat type Hob here now who nearly every outing makes a kill and either has to be dug or patiently wait until he shows himself again.... I'm now considering taking a smaller line off a pal but still unsure. Big'uns or little'uns ? Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,067
seen good and bad in both,, and owned em.... on the hole i prefer a small to meduim jill,,, 2 main reasons,, 1st i can get more ferrets in a carrying box,, if your doing big places this is a real advantage,,,, 2nd they wil pass through a purse net without knocking it about... big hobs cannot do this. but like anything there are downsides,, somtimes the little jills can get kicked around especialy in a tube that has alot of space,, this being said my smallest jill, is at presant my number 1 killer,, and will stay longer than all my other ferrets ,, and even some cracking big hobs... i also dont hold with the notion that they wont work all day,,, mine do , and have had some big scores 1 Quote Link to post

jasper65 6
Thanks for the input lads its much apreciated . mine big Hobs work for England but have a tendancy to muller Rabbits below ground, think I might now try a smaller type as mentioned above and see how it works out, its no fun digging when Hawking expecially when I'm on my own..... Jasp Trev My missus has had 21 years of a small one mate ..... Quote Link to post
Trev Smilerface 38
On a serious note .........my hob and jill ae about the same size. But in past experience a slightly smaller ferret does seem to get them to bolt easier than big.....but then it all boils down to the ferrets at the end of the day . Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
A mix. But if i had to have one ferret and one ferret only, i would opt for a medium - strapping jill. 2 Quote Link to post

Mick C. 229
A rabbit that wants to bolt will kick a small gill off and make good is escape Three or four of this type would allow you to fly more and dig less Quote Link to post
tegater 789
All my jills are small. Not out of choice thats just the way they are. They have no problems getting the bunnies to bolt in my opinion and kill rarely underground, which is what I want. There are quite a few times were they are stationary for several minutes, but then a bunny will bolt with chewed eyeballs. I accept this is usually where the bunny is backed up, but I think larger stronger ferrets would more than likely kill a lot more. Quote Link to post
paulus 26
having a bird and dog with you and being on your own then 1 ferret is about all you can manage otherwise stress levels tend to rise Quote Link to post
shabadoodoo 16
ive got a big hob, every time i use him i have to dig everytime, unless there nothing in the sett Quote Link to post
web22 27
i prefer the bigger ferret,i work three hobs(2 large,1 medium)and one jill(average size)so i have a good mix but i find the bigger hobs shift more so if i could only take one it would be a good size hob... Quote Link to post
