The best Calibre for Fox

Recommended Posts

really no one best calibre though the 223 seems to be most serious fox shooters weapon off choice partly cause theyre cheap to feed and home load and because theyre fast and flat. i personally use a 243 but any of the 22 centrefires will do the job. the ground that you shoot over also can have a bearing. at the end of the day any that you feel comfortable using and that will kill humanely will do the job. if you want to try stalking you will have to go 243 upwards.

hope this helps.

Back in Germany I used 22.250 as my round of choice for Fox, it shoots nice and flat and has enough punch to stop them in their tracks. But that was in open fields. For closer work I would take a 223 or 243. The 223 because it is cheap to feed and the 243 because it is a nice all round calibre.

Currently setting money aside (without the Mrs knowing ;) ) for a 6.5x55 for fox and deer.. a little on the heavy side maybe...

Anyone rate the .204... i know a chap who reccons he gets over 4000fps out of his handloads and he love the cartridge for fox.

Hello many cal's do the job i have a 22.250 & 25/06 but the 22.250 is the 1 for me flat & easy on powder consumption.Iv herd a bit about the 204 & all good. The real answer here is the cal of the man/woman behind the rifle as long they a compident the fox is dead.

Tried them all, the .204 whups ALL the .22 centrefires, but not the .243 accuracy wise. All killed with a .204, my best being almost 300 yards.

I build rifles for a living, and have shot foxes professionally for 3 years. I have 2 rimmies, a 6mm br, a 6.5 swede, a 223, and shortly a 308...... the .204 is the only gun i use for foxing.

If you ask this question of a dozen different foxing men, you will get a dozen different answers. I prefer the .204, because its better ballistically than all the 22 c/f,s apart from the swift, which no one uses anymore anyway, because its barrels buggered at a thousand rounds. The .204 shoots flatter than all the .22,s because its lighter, and ballistically superior [better retained energy ] thus making it much easier to connect with the real long rangers. There are a lot of myths surrounding the cartridge, coming usually from people who,s "mate" has one etc... they arent affected by wind badly, and they dont surface splash either, at least not in my experience, and the good thing is, the factory hornady 32 grain round, is a very fast, and accurate case, so people dont have to reload if they dont want to.

I,ve also used a .243, shooting light bullets, which seems to be just like a .204 speed wise, but obviously with a heavier bullet, which has got to be better, plus its deer legal, so would be my choice for a dual purpose gun. If it was just for fox/varmint, its the .204 for me, but as i,ve said, just my opinion.
