planete 120
Probably a silly question but could a dog trained to recall with a whistle respond one day to a whistle of the same frequency blown by a stranger? Has anybody known it to happen? I exercise my pup in the New Forest and would rather not have him confused by a whistle happy dog walker one day!
oscarsdad 4
It is not just the frequency, more how the whistle is blown and it is unlikely that anyone else will blow it in the same way so the dog will only respond to you and your whistle.

Moll. 1,770
Quite possibly could. Depends on the dog and your levels of control. Mine probably would go and investigate the caller (If no-where near me at the time) but would return to me when they realised. If mine hear an excited terrier type noise they will go and investigate
planete 120
My question was prompted by an incident the other day when we were in woodland and somebody was blasting away somewhere on a whistle. Dylan went crazy quartering the bushes around us. I assumed he was looking for the funny sounding wounded animal. Thankfully he did not leave me, just looked like a very confused pup. It got me thinking that he might have gone to the whistle if I had trained him to respond to one. Unfortunately lurchers have been picked up and taken away around here when found by the wrong people. I would like to train him to a whistle but only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
