Gilford Lurcher & Terrier Club Annual Show At Moira Game Fair

Recommended Posts

I was going for the whippet racing or whippet coursing By the looks things thats Moria game fair off my list of events Not every whippet in Ireland goes to Dunsilly

Do you know if whippets without kc papers are allowed to run at Dunsilly?

Whippets do not have to be KC registered to race or show at the Sporting Whippet Club N.I. events at Dunsilly, but they do have to be pure bred whippets - not non peds!

thats debeatalbe !so many arguments on this subject...were in this country could we get a whippet expert to tell the difference...? i know i cant!

i got told off for letting 2 different "whippets" run at my show, so what does can a show organizer do to make it fair? the perfect answer stimulated coursing ! it least will sort of the workers from the pets !!

Was at the show both days and must say it was a very well organised and professionally run show. The judging standard was second to none, well done to all involved.!   There is a lot of work goes i

Yes if there's enough Whippets on the day of course we will give them a run,we just did'nt want to tramp on Janet & Co toe's as they have a Whippet event

so will there be no straight racing at all for whippets? and what way are you working the entries for the whippets simulated coursing ? as is what gets in and whats not allowed?...as i have a young whippet there but no papers...?

No straight racing planned for the Whippets, just simulated racing on the Saturday .

We will be taking entry's as per usual for the Whippet racing and papers will not be required.

I am more than happy to provide an extra trophy & rosette for anyone who wants to attend the racing on the

Sunday with their Whippet ,providing there is enough that turns up.

But as i have stated Janet's Club is running an event the same day and this is the reason we have not planned for Whippet racing on Sunday.

Hi Ian, Was wondering if you are having classes for 'Veterans' and 'Pairs' in the whippets :hmm: as you seem to have classes for them in both lurchers and terriers? ;)

Hi

We have never had these class's for Whippets, but it is an option will take on board and will consider for our next show .

Is it always easy to tell the difference? Does anyone ever dispute what their dog is?

Ian, it would be nice if you could have Whippet Pairs, Vetern Whippet, and Overall Champion Whippet at this years show . Whippet people make up quite a sizeable part of the show goers. Also are you having a child handling class. Children of today are the show organisers of tomorrow

Hi Margaret

We always have had a Overall Champion Whippet at Moira,as regards the Whippet pairs we last had a trophy for this

class 3 years ago but stopped putting one on as there was never any pairs appearing in the ring and we have never

have done veteran Whippet.

But having said that i totally agree with you Margaret that Whippet's have become a big part of our modern show event's

and at your request i have ordered more trophies to accomadate your request.

And aslo we had been planning to have a child handling class at the sart of the show with treats to be handed out to the kids.

It is very important to our club and me personally Margaret that good folk like yourselves feel very welcome at our events.

Thanks For Your Post

Ian

The DWTC Traditional Dog Show Sunday 25thMay 2025
As the showing season has now took off for 2025 and the work in the field complete, it was nice to be able to make our annual trip to the DWTC traditional dog show on Sunday  25th May  in Gilford.  The weather  was not kind to us, with a light wind and several heavy showers in between  classes. This did not dampen the spirits of the show goers who came out to support this now popular annual show. The venue was superb, and the crowd was big.
Our shows are all great meeting places in the summer season for genuine Terrier, Lurcher, Whippet and Strong dog men and women to come together for a bit of craic  and a chat, and maybe go home with a trophy or two. And that is exactly what happened at the DWTC show on Sunday.
It was nice to see so many families, their children and dogs all out on enjoying a day out at the sport we love. Our passion is showing with our Canine friends in the summer and back to the field with them in the winter.
As show time was about to start, first on the menu and first in the ring was the childrens handling class. And boy did these little folk show their dogs. There were 24 very excited we people in the ring and everyone with their very special friend. You were all winners on the day and all went home with bags of lovely goodies to munch on. Well done to all.
The show commenced at approximately 1.00pm.
*Here are the Overall Showing Results
      Childrens Handling Class
      1/ Jake Maginn with Fly
      2/ Amy Whitten with Snoopy
      3/ John Boyd with Jack
These young people participating are our huntsmen and women of tomorrow and will keep our Country Sports going long after we have gone.
Congratulations to the winners and all the children in the ring on Sunday.

      Kyle Quinn with Chapo
      ***Overall Champion Pup***

      Congratulations to all above winners
And Finally, the day would not be complete without thanking the Judges.
      Childrens Handling Class
      Leanne Barry/Raymond Crilly
      Whippets / Jim Forrester
      Lurchers/ Jim Forrester
      Terriers/  Raymond Crilly
      Strong Dogs/ Eddie Shaw
And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. Yes Tom and Leanne Barry, Ethan, Morgan, and your back up team Gary Mitchell and Thomas Coleman, you are all simply the best. Your show was run with impeccable organisation and everything ran without a hitch.
It was very evident a lot of preparation and hard work went on behind the scenes to make this show a success this year again and was a most enjoyable day for everyone.
Tom and Leanne, a brilliant day was had by all despite the rain. The window for Country Sports is in our blood and hopefully we will meet again at your show in 2026 for more of the same.
