Rabbits?

Recommended Posts

went out with a pal the other day Ferreting and Hawking on a old Landfull site I have hawked for years, in the past I have never had a problem with the bunnies on there but the last few times we noticed a few that are bolted never have any GO about them, they come out the hole like a Rabbit with mixxy and litterly just trot with no fight about them which are easily taken by the Hawk. I have checked them over time and time again to this date can't find any signs of them being molested by the Ferret or any signs of desease.

the crunch came the other day when I gave my bird a cropfull off one of these Rabbits to finish the day, the bird digested half and threw the rest up! from the time I got him home he was trying to bring up most of the rabbit and looked pretty poorly, to be honest at one point I thought I was going to lose him but he now seems on the mend after some antibiotics.

question is has anyone else come acriss Rabbits like this showing no visable signs of desease but seem lethargic wityh no GO about them? its a strange one as it always seems to be on this patch of ground and surrounding area :hmm:.....

I'm a bit concerned about it mick as this is prime flying land I have hawked and shot over for years. the Rabbits virtually just lay down when caught the behave identicle to a Bunny riddled with Mixxy but with no visable signs, infact they look perfect....

Just a thought but could there be any chance of the gases these landfills sites produce having an effect on the rabbits when underground?... :hmm:

You say that youve hunted there for years and i agree with lab-tastics question about gas being an answer. Also if it is an old landfill......regulations about dumping in them years back werent as strict as now.....you dont know what sort of toxic waste may have been dumped there in the past.

Personal opinion i would never feed anything with a rabbit from a landfill site.

Funny you say that Lab, in around the landfill the gases are being piped off where some old sites have been back filled, in the past pre ban a lad I was with refused to work his terrier on the old site because of this which makes sense. I have Ferreted the place for a good few years now but never come across Rabbits quite like this, having said that the bigger this Landfill gets the more Gas is produced ...

It seemed funny how the Hawk went downhill fast after eating the Rabbit, its a mystery to me mate as I have never seen anything like it what looks like a perfectly normal Rabbit....

Its been backfilled time and time again and piped off trev, you can here the pipes hissing continuously as the gas is fed down them. it goes to show the amount of Methane being pumped off this place aswel as other Gases roaming about. the Landfill changes shape all the time as one is filled in another is opend.

I think you and Lab have a point on this one, just strange how some Rabbits bolted out the same Warrens are ok and others are not :hmm:....

Jasper you should take a Carbon Monoxide monitor along and stick it down a hole and see what kind of readings you get. Might not be enough to kill rabbits but make them woosy......i would have thought it would have had an effect on young rabbits though?

Just out of curiosity is it still a working landfill or has it been capped already?

Yep parts are still very much alive Trev but for how long I don't know, they're slowly running out of room by the looks of it.

Perhaps the Rabbits are being hit with Gas over a prolonged period which slowly makes them high, I know the Ferret when being worked on there are fine, even had one out for a night in the past with no side effects...

if the Rabbit have taken on Gas would this still effect anything that eats them? it just seems funny the Goshawk went down hill within a hour or so of ingesting the meat....

Been checking around mate on the net and cant really find anything on the subject....theres loads of stuff from landfills that can have issues on living species. The landfill here in Cork harbour has been found to have highly toxic waste and radioactive materials now it has to be made safe costing millions.

But on your landfill site ....they do have to do regular checks on gasses. Maybe pop into the site office and just notify them of your findings and they can take it from there. I worked a landfill in Colnbrook in Slough and they are pretty tight on these things nowadays. Will keep checking around for ya though .

RHD perhaps? :hmm:

Rabbits that die from RHD are usually in good outward state.

Taken from here:

http://en.wikipedia....rrhagic_disease

Now that makes alot of sense Malt . there's plenty of decent bunnies we bolted but just the odd few mongey one's for some reason. no signs of dead anywhere if anything it looks better Bunny wise than it had for a long while.

all internals look fine on them too, its a weired one mate and could well be RHD getting hold of some of them...

pretty worrying all the same when it took my Goshawk down .....
