trinder 127
As a child i spent most of my time fishing which i contiued to do up untill about 2 years ago . i started to ge bored of the same old thing (catching and releasing) and decideed to get into hunting . up untill that time id only done a bit of lamping with an air rifle with a friend but that didnt quite cut it . one day i decided id try hunting with dogs and went out and got myself a terrier which was a big mistake as me being new to the game went out and bought myself a mixed terrier from non working stock and he is useless to say the least , his one redeeming quality is he is realy loyal and loves my daughter so he stayed . i then went on to get myself a better dog from working parents and he is a belter in my eys and hasnt let me down yet and since he is only 2 i think that is exellent . like i said i was new to hunting and thought i could go out with a terrier and catch rabbits which i soon realized wasnt the case so after some constant nagging my missus gave in and said i could have a running dog . So one day while looking on the internet i saw a lurcher free to good home in my local area , i was sceptical about this but decided to have a look at him , i arrived at the house and was appauled at the way the dog was kept he was a mess scared of his own shadow he was never exercised and locked in a kitchen most of his life (13 months) as soon as i approached him he was all over me licking and generally happy i asked what his breeding was as he looked a bit mongrely and the answer i got was he got some greyhound in him . i decided to take him anyway as i couldnt stand to see him kept this way , the next day i took him out to do some bushing with my terrier just to see if he was game , my terrier started to work some cover and was giving tongue ,straight away my new dog (benson)was patrolling the edge of the cover waiting for a bolt, i was happy to say the least and quickly went home to work on some basic training. After a few weeks of basic obedience and retrieve training with shot pidgeons and ball i decided to try him on the lamp . So night after night we went out looking around for some rabbits returning home with nothing but benson was learning all the same following lamp realy well . then one night he caught his first bunny he was bouncing around like a kid proud of what he had done i was realy happy that he had come out of himself and was doing something he liked , so over the summer we were out every night trying for the easy bunnys and allthough we blanked allot we were happy being out . Then the season came and thats when i realized how much he had learned , he turns well ,thinks about where the quarry is heading and what not to run . Im not saying he is a world beater but im happy . Im now obsessed with dogs and cant get enough of all types of huntig with them be it ferreting , lamping or just mooching about with terrier an lurcher and i can honestly say that its going to be a life long commitment , the thrill of watching a dog ive trained catch or bolt quarry is amazing and i get the same buzz from catching a rabbit now as i did from the very first time . I know alot of the lads on hear wouldnt touch a dog that was like mine either cause of the cross or the fact it was of unknown heritidge but the time i spent with him has payed off and i will be a true fan of the working lucher till the day i die . thanks for taking the time to read this post i just had to get it out . Bosun11 537
Good on ya Trinder. Don't matter where your dog is from, nor whats in him, if he keeps you content thats what counts. You sound a man that is happy with his lot and they are few and far between on here.. Best of luck! 2 Quote Link to post

chartpolski 23,108
Great read Trinder ! I would also get bored with the "catch & release" !! Why do it ? Nothing better than fishing... salmon , trout, course or sea fishing... and eat the fresh catch !! Same with the dogs; it's great to eat what you and your dogs have caught ! Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post
